Song of the Moment: Mind Your Manners

I'm going to try and take this thing one song at a time and keep any specific expectations out of it. The wait will be hard enough without me fucking it up and making it harder.

So far, MYM is good enough that it proves to me this guys still have tricks up their sleeve. They can still do this thing and affect me. My expectations go no further than: I expect a good album.

Maybe after another single or two... but right now, I'm just trying to enjoy MYM and not think too hard about the rest of it.

This is all very sensible but I'm not. I haven't anticipated a PJ album like this since... the last time I did.

Despite being cynic and now old, instinct and central nervous system are still working. Mind Your Manners reminded me what I really miss from that band, in the sentimental field. The instant,direct almost primitive sensation of intimacy and enthusiasm and the illusion of understanding. Last time I got that from the first listen was "Parachutes"( I dislike most of the eponymous). Technicalities on M.Y.M. such as how I find the solo totally unnecessary or the production is to "clean" for my taste etc, wouldn't have mattered,at least not in the first listen, if the song wasn't based in the after Riot Act typical pj blueprint. The ''punk'' renewal is unidentifiable to me because of the lack of the above elements, so no comparison with S.T.B.C.
I liked the Soundgarden vibe and the Comatose reference is qute.

I don't know if it's their best punk song ever. I'm also not comfortable discussing its punk authenticity. But I do think it might be my favorite punk song they've ever done. It grabbed me instantly and hooked me in the same way all my favorite punks songs have done. And I can't think of another Pearl Jam punk song that's done just that out of the gate. Maybe Lukin. I've loved that thing from listen #1, too.

True story: I haven't spoken to anyone (in real life, not online) about Mind Your Manners. I have no idea if I know anyone personally who has heard it and if so, whether or not they like it. That's weird, to me.

I think "Dream a Little Dream" is one of Eddie's best vocal performances in recent memory. That's exactly the sort of thing he should be doing more of.

I sing that song to Ellie ever night when I put her to bed, and I totally started that because of Uke songs. He sounds better, though.

And you might be right. I just don't have the qualifications or credentials to dive into those aspects. The song hasn't been out long enough for me to call it "best" anything. Not yet. First impression? Yes, the best punk song Pearl Jam's done based on first impressions. But as we all know, those change.

Also, I'm not connoisseur of punk music. There's a lot of shit I don't know. So I can't address the authenticity bit. But I think you might be right. In fact, I'll be a little surprised if this song doesn't age well. It's got a lot going for it.

I never embraced STBC but I always figured it was because it lacked melody and was the lead single. I liked Blood's pure rage and deceptive catchiness. Blood also felt interstitial. Like Lukin it's a punk dinner mint. STBC is full rage and riff and odd message about loving vinyl and devoid of melody which makes it a flat liner for me. STBC is an inside joke: Ed loves thrash punk + Ed loves vinyl = spin, spin, spin the black circle!! I wasn't on board.

Sneaking a melody into Mind Your Manners with the bridge is the secret sauce to its success.

Most of friends love this song. And they are pretty huge fans of PJ.
