Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
Apparently there are some songs about hearing loss, too.
Known song titles so far:
“Why Can’t You See”
“What’s That?”
“Say That Again”
“Huh?”

Spritzt is the German word for squirt so it's oddly fitting.tragabigzanda wrote:pretty sure numbersup popularized "spritzy." I love that it's migrated over to Hoffman. The genie's out of the bottle on that one.

The latter. Also, please no guest musicians. They don’t need them.Kevin Davis wrote:"Sounds a lot like the bands first works" is pretty much what's been said about every new PJ album since Yield. It probably just means it's a rock song, but I wouldn't put much stock in it actually meaning anything.Fattie_Vedder wrote:Agreed. Front end of Vitalogy could mean something more akin to Not For You or Tremor Christ, which I think they could pull off, or something more like Spin The Black Circle, which would mean the return of squawky Ed. I absolutely love STBC, but i don’t think this current form of the band should be making songs like that anymore.tommy wrote:Hopefully that doesn't mean the return of squawky Ed
February 2024 will have it being about 4 years since Gigaton, roughly the same time that passed between Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. That 4 years between 2009 and 2013 felt like an eternity, but -- despite the fact that early COVID feels like ages ago -- Gigaton still feels like it just came out. Not sure if this reflects something about the albums, or just about the depressing passage of time as you get older.

I kinda like my PJ squirting out punters. Is Habit a Squirting punker?

And no. Habit is not a spritzy squirty punker.

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
I think this merits a fun and interesting conversation about how to categorize spritzy vs non-spritzy punkers.Tj wrote:I think Habit really squirts.
First, what are the characteristics of ’spritz’:
- most importantly, tone. The tone of the song must be upbeat, positive, the kind of spritz that sprouted post Avocado
- “shine”: the sound/ production lends itself to putting a little shine on the song
- chord / song structure: simple, fast, repetitive power chords, the kind that Eddie loves
- word salad: this one is tricky. There are plenty of non-spritzy punkers and non-punkers alike that come with a side of word salad, but the spritzy punkers naturally lend themselves to having the wordiest salads
Examples of spritzy punkers:
- supersonic* (trash)
- superblood wolfmoon (sometimes trash, sometimes I like it. Depends on my mood)
- gonna see my friend (good spritz!)
- mind your manners (mixed. Again mood dependent. Love the solo)
Punkers sans spritz:
- habit (crushes faces live. At least in the earlier days)
- spin the black circle (fucking fire. Outstanding punker)
Somewhere in-between, Leakage (sometimes they squirt):
- never destination (good. Got some interesting parts)
- comatose (great message. Good lyrics. Unfortunate birth of squawky Ed)
- green disease (really like this one)
Overall, I prefer less punk and certainly less spritz in general from PJ, but they are capable of making decent ones.
* before anyone says “but supersonic was written by Stone, I know, but remember Ed is Stone’s muse.

I agree with pretty much all of this. Also, if you're including Green Disease, then MFC has to fit in one of these categories as well. Maybe Whipping too?

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
i agree with almost all of this as well, and am pretty blown away by it
however i'd consider Habit and Spin the Black Circle to be 'hard rockers' and not 'punkers'
and would posit that spritzy punkers include a snappy, uninspired snare

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
Oooh MFC is a tricky one. On the surface it could be confused as a spritzy punker because if it’s tone, but upon further analysis, it does not check the boxes for shine nor word salad. Also, it’s less chord driven than it is riff driven, and my goodness those echoey, floaty, driving riffs are beautiful. I LOVE MFC.guitar_davey wrote:Fattie_Vedder wrote:I think this merits a fun and interesting conversation about how to categorize spritzy vs non-spritzy punkers.Tj wrote:I think Habit really squirts.

Other non-spritzy punkers:
- Lukin: always been a fan. It’s the perfect length.
- Brain of J: a pseudo punker due to the verse, but the chorus is anything but. Zero spritz. Out-fucking-standing song.

Good call. I actually agree, those are hard rockers not punkers. Same as Brain of J and Lukin.96583UP wrote:i agree with almost all of this as well, and am pretty blown away by it
