BurtReynolds wrote:"Accountability" out of their mouths always sounds like the desire to instill their guilt and shame and neurosis on everyone around them. But speaking of accountability, how about being accountable for one's own feelings rather than externalizing the blame for them to other people's words, or demanding everyone walk on eggshells for one's own benefit?
this is about freedom of speech, which assumes freedom of response (and I don't mean hitting, I mean not being OK with a joke; I don't see the rights of comedians to say what they want as any more objective or "reasonable")
It sounds like you agree. Nobody says you have to like the joke. We draw the line at hitting.
we draw a legal line, and that's fine; I know there will come a day when one of my reactions to a stranger trying to attack me will be called the only attack that took place, and maybe even assault; and the systems we have in place will make the wrong call; this happens over and over again to trans women and disabled people (and black people, especially black men, though I won't speak for them any more than I have, it has been entitled in places)

there is a lot of automatic equating of "legality" with moral justice, and I don't think those always overlap

I want verbal jokes, taunts, threats, whatever to be given equal weight in that conversation

maybe I want a utopia, but maybe that's OK

You can't claim to be merely for understanding, then claim that physical attacks to jokes is morally just lol. It's just motte and bailey bullshit.

You don't want understanding, you want to materially enforce your worldview on everyone around you.

I don’t think that’s an ideal world because it leads to all sorts of booby traps and unforeseen hidden snares. Words shouldn’t be given such weight.

I’m just trying to figure out the line. What about the wife who’s husband slapped her because she told a joke about him in front of his friends? And then apologizes? Should she not process it longer and move on because he already said sorry?

I just want people to understand that they should do whatever I say, and if they don't I can attack them!

And people wonder what I mean when I call you tyrannical lol

I think it’s good we know who the Nazis are. If speech were illegal they wouldn’t be so willing to out themselves.

Hurting someone’s feelings isn’t necessarily hate speech or discrimination. It isn’t that subjective.
