S/T is my dark horse. I listen to that more than almost any PJ album other than Yield.tragabigzanda wrote:? half the people on here didn't even know who pearl jam was when 'no code' came out. i feel like the overall opinion at the time was pearl jam trying to be less commercial and more experimental on 'no code', but if you ask this board today is probably #1 or #2 behind 'yield'.

No Code was pretty pivotal in my life personally. I was 15 in 1996. Lots of shit going down for me & my brother.
On the heels of Merkinball/Mirrorball? It was huge for me.

This album, gigaton, probably gets a point from me because of the pandemic and everything swirling around my life at the time.

I wasn't a hater exactly, but at the time I definitely felt that Vitalogy and No Code were hugely underwhelming after Ten and Vs.VinylGuy wrote:remember Binaural? well, even No Code at the time...

Re: Gigaton: Official album thread
I more or less discovered that there were actually people talking online about Pearl Jam at some point post No Code and prior to Yield being released. It wasn't universal, but at that time No Code was definitely considered by the majority to be the bands weakest release to date. Then at some point in the next couple of years the online majority were talking about it being the bands best.

It still strikes me that Gigaton is the only Pearl Jam release that is a significant improvement over the album that preceded it.

Because everything leading up to Lightning Bolt was so good.Thurman Murman wrote:It still strikes me that Gigaton is the only Pearl Jam release that is a significant improvement over the album that preceded it.
Is what you mean?
I'd say Backspacer was the first one to not meet the level of the album prior. I like parts of it, but the lows for me are lower than Pearl Jam: The Album.

I just mean that the jump in quality from Lightning Bolt to Gigaton is so significant its like nothing we've ever seen from a new Pearl Jam release.elliseamos wrote:Because everything leading up to Lightning Bolt was so good.Thurman Murman wrote:It still strikes me that Gigaton is the only Pearl Jam release that is a significant improvement over the album that preceded it.

Yeah, he’s right. The quality jump is unique (in this career) because it is substantial.
