Do we have ventilators to move?

It’s an interesting question. We could easily retool factories in WW2 because it was mostly line workers. Now it’s highly specialized machines that do one thing, which is unlikely to be make medical ventilators.

There's some on hand from the federal government; I don't know the exact number, though NYC is getting about 400 supposedly from this reserve. But presumably he can spur production of ventilators while depleting the reserves they have on hand.

The inability to grasp the scope of the problem in the tri-state area, and particularly NYC, is just odd, even if Trump's coming from a self-serving perspective. I get that New York's the spawn of Satan for the right wing, but it's hard to imagine the country's economy floating along as normal if NYC turns into northern Italy.

But Trump's reasoning not to do it (or at least from his administration) hasn't had anything to do with capacity; they've said they'd prefer not to it that way.

It would be great if the companies just did it, but I suspect they are holding out for some sweet federal money, hence his 1.5T stimulus handout plan

That was his argument yesterday: since they know I can make them.now they will just volunteer.

I'd agree, but my assumption was that that was the reason the law was created; to sidestep haggling in moments of crisis.

But I'd also agree that there's no way mass production alone can get the country where it needs to be. Which is why this idea of taking the foot off the brake on slowing the spread of the virus seems mad.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has said that the state has 620 ventilators.

Here is what terrifies physicians, public health officials and others:

An estimated 40% to 70% of the total population is projected to become infected by the virus.
Roughly 1 million people in the state are over 65, the age group most at risk from COVID-19.
If 40% of the people over 65 become infected and 2.5% of them became critically ill and required ventilators, it works out to 10,000 people.
What’s more, some of the state’s 620 ventilators will be needed for other patients.

Even if most vulnerable populations continue to stay relatively isolated, how far are those 620 ventilators going to go? Imagine this happening in every state around the country. And Trump's plan would guarantee that we'd bear the greatest hits earlier rather than later.

It turns out Donald Trump doesn’t even have to go to 5th Avenue to kill people without losing voters. When you’re a star, they let you do it.

Here’s some info about US supply of ventilators. Pretty scary stuff.

Ezekiel Emanuel on what we need to be doing right now.-https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/23/opin ... ponse.html

Social distancing is great---it's what we all need to be doing right now to slow the spread of the virus and "flatten the curve" so that we don't all get sick at once and overwhelm the healthcare system. But it is not a solution, it will not solve the problem. All it can do is buy time. We need to be using the time that we are buying with social distancing (right now!) to affect that other line on the famous "flatten the curve" chart. We need to raise that horizontal line indicating healthcare system capacity---and Dr. Emanuel has a lot of good ideas for how to do so in the link. This is not happening right now in the states. The Senate is arguing over an economic stimulus package and the President is musing about when the right time to re-start the economy will be. The economic cost is real but it is secondary to the issue causing the economic problems in the first place. The government has to move now and move drastically to increase healthcare capacity to deal with this and then figure out how to fix the stock market
