I don't buy for one minute, people who are too scared to go into record stores and buy what they want cause they don't want to defend their purchase. The fuck is that all about? If you're afraid to justify you're purchase, you've got some issues.
These dollar bin reissues make as much sense to be as those vinyl subscription clubs. If you're too lazy to go out and look for what you want, and just want to "buy it now" you should probably just get into coin collecting or other worthless timesink.

I'm lazy and shouldn't but records because I joined a vinyl club? That's bullshit and get over yourself. I happen to purchase through many avenues. Vinyl club, Amazon, online retailers, record stores. I learned about w couple artists through the vinyl club that I may never have other ways.

I'll just go back to collecting hockey cards then.

The vinyl club thing I dont get. Lets say I like 4 of the 12 releases, what am I supposed to do with the other crap they send me? Plus, from what ive seen the cuts they pick are pretty obvious.

Yes I am canceling my membership but I enjoyed it for the few records I got. Even got a free copy of FAther john misty first record which I hadn't picked up previously.

I can tell you being in a band and having to account for an additional 3 + months of pressing time is very frustrating. Some places will offer an additional service charge to "potentially" bump you up the queue. It isn't a guarantee in any way, just a promise to "try" and get a small amount of your order completed early. It's crazy.

Planning your recording, mixing, mastering, pressing, promo can be flexible. However, the tour isn't and it REALLY sucks when you may hit the road without your vinyl.

That said, the demand is growing and we just deal with the reality. CD sales at shows are plummeting, so the best source of income is vinyl. If there wasn't such a demand, we wouldn't be making as much per show, so thankful for that….

I really don't know if I have much to add, but as a pretty mainstream vinyl collector I'm quite happy with the selection of titles that are readily available to me through multiple retail options (be they brick & mortar or online). At the end of the day, we want the artists that we like to have records readily available for us to purchase. If there is higher demand for the Top Gun soundtrack reissue, over an independent artist, then the market will dictate what gets pressed. Life is too short to get pissed off because there are loads of Taylor Swift records on the shelves. Money talks.

And just to put all my cards on the table, in the last month I have:
- Listened to the Top Gun soundtrack on vinyl (original pressing that I bought for $5 many years ago)
- Been to a small indie show, held the band's $30(!) record in my hand at the merch table, put it down, went home and downloaded two full albums of mp3s for free.

Yeah it's easy to say, well market dictates what will sell and will be available en masse. Not my problem, I like the connivence...

All I'm saying is think about the people getting shafted when these big pressing houses do silly projects like these. And if it doesn't irk you at least a little, man, I don't know...

Big business will tap in, drain the $$$, and eventually depart.

Yes it irks me. Although it was more irksome to me when I was younger/more idealistic/thought it all meant something/believed that music was so artful, etc, etc. I've mellowed a lot when it comes to that sort of altruistic integrity around music and collecting. I was very much into being that guy from High Fidelity. I have tattoos to prove it. Nowadays, I just feel it's so commercialized anyways that it's lost a lot of that meaning. And those little people "getting shafted" are still just trying to capitalize anyways.

Many of us started collecting records because it was slightly counter-culture. Amiright? I was buying Vitalogy because my favourite band was releasing the record a week before the CD came out. It was "special order". They put it aside for me a the record store. I ran home and listened to it before anyone else did. It felt more special to own the record because it was bigger, rarer, (might possibly) sound better and showed your intense dedication to that artist because you sought it out. Now I can just go on Amazon and order just about anything I want. I certainly think we've reached a tipping point, and I'll be happy when it chills out and the little people can get their indie records pressed again. Until then we just have to ride the wave of Goonies Soundtracks and Michael Jackson picture discs and be happy that you can occasionally buy a decent album when you're at the mall.

Just think of the tsunami of collections, hi-fi gear and turntables that will flood the 2nd hand market when the bubble bursts and all the kiddies start thinking CDs are the cool thing to collect.

Or, also, we could just be happy that the kids and people are experiencing the joy of listening to a record. The entire process that is listening to a record. Spending money on records, paying more money to bands because they are buying record and such

To me its as simple as not seeing anything wrong with making more people happy. If a lot of people want to be made happy by purchasing a new copy of top gun, then by all means, lets make some folks happy.
