The Project Hail Mary audio book is my son and my favourite audio book. I loved it, got him to listen and he loved it too. This will be literally the first time I've gone to the movies in at least 3 years.

And I think you may be missing the "taking my whole family" aspect here VG. The movie isn't the important bit, it's the time with these most important people in my life.

After the movie you can tell me if it was a good use of your time or maybe you can bring your family around the psychedelic funk of OHM and enjoy the family aspect thing

I had this album when I was maybe 10 years old? I have not heard this in probably close to 35 years at least. There were and will be albums in this thread one day that were the sort of impetus for me to throw out nearly all my old tapes and CDs and start over. I am pretty sure this is one that I threw away in that mad dash. Admittedly, David Coverdale assembled one helluva band here, even if the songs are pretty hard to get through. Produced in 80s style to absolute death, and complete with 80s guitar riff cheese, I wish I could say this is all bad. I didn’t like this album pretty much at all, other than a tip of the cap on Still of the Night to the aping of Zeppelin. On the choruses to both Here I Go Again and Is This Love, I might have threw up in my mouth a little. Certainly felt the queasiness of shame creeping up. But you got at least give it to them, they swung big on this, and on its moment, it was a hit. It is, in the end, the ultimate dated album. One of those things you throw in a time capsule with the mullet perm only to see what humans were like before they were accountable to social media.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard this complete album. I had actually always thought Still of the Night was on a previous album. Had no idea it was on this one. Even with only being aware of the hits, I’ve never really cared for them. The only real thing I’ve ever cared for with Coverdale was his stuff with Page and probably really only because he was a Plant substitute on that.

Def Leppard - Hysteria

I feel like maybe this is thee hair metal album of all times. Granted, it does have a more arena pop thing happening - like Journey or maybe Bon Jovi - both of which I may be refusing to engage with here. That said, it’s probably ultimately among the better of the albums in this subgenre, and has that fist pumping, belt out all the words while no one’s watching at the empty bowling alley bar from the 90s quality…so not half bad. It certainly rose above at least the last few albums with its radio friendly hits, though I am not sure how much I’ll come back to this. It was entertaining for sure though.

The Essential Track: Pour Some Sugar On Me (Though pick any of the many hits here and it’s easy to justify)

I can’t explain why I revolted so strongly at that album, but it’s what happened. The exciting news is that the Rick Astley album is not at the bottom of the list.

To be fair, if I did include Journey, Bon Jovi, and New Kids on the Block, they would undoubtedly be below Rick Astley, as would possibly the Eagles.

Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls

Sometimes Eddie Vedder’s got a point. I mean, the bookends of this album, Wild Side and a spirited if not sleazy cover of Elvis’s Jailhouse Rock, are bona fide highlights to my ears. The rest of the album just kind of sucks. It’s a real caricature of hair metal, with a sort of polished effort at something gritty (gritty is more like GNR, coming up in a few albums). It’s still better than Poison, but that’s not a very high bar.

Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I

Compared to what I had been listening to, this is a big upgrade. This is a power metal album, not so dissimilar in sound to an Iron Maiden. I do really like when metal songs have multiple movements, so Halloween is a natural spot for a favorite, and while the songs are admittedly a little weird in spots, I found this to be a generally good album full of big riffs and solos, and evoking that early 80s British metal vibe (my understanding is this is a German metal band). Especially if you are not digging too deep and want an entertaining metal album, this checks those boxes.

Up Next: Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction

Hell yeah. Even as someone who generally does not enjoy "traditional" metal in that vein, that album rips.
