I can actually see how that moment could work in theory, and I see what Snyder is going for.

It could be a totally ham fisted execution, though

The mom thing sounds hokey but it works within the context of the movie.

Bruce is driven by his loss of his parents. Superman is about to lose his mother. Tapping into losing ones parent is a perfectly cromulent reaction.

It's not really any dumber than Kevin Costner and Christian Slater becoming supertight Robin Hoods as soon as Chris's secret is revealed. It just becomes a question of whether that type of plot device (which plays just fine in a campy 90's flick where Robin Hood is American and Morgan Freeman is there at all) can translate into a movie that takes itself this seriously and wants to be perceived as high-minded.

That scene got better in my second viewing. Not only does it humanize Superman in his eyes, it flashes Bats back to the night of his parents' death, and puts him on the other side of the trigger. It makes him realize what his obsession with taking down Supes was turning him into, and he is disgusted with himself. Anyone who reads that moment as merely "they stopped fighting because their mothers have the same name" is doing so out of sheer cynicism, but hey, it's the internet.

What doesn't work about the scene is how:
- It very abruptly turns to "OK, I will help you, we are friends now";
- Superman just agrees to let Batman save Martha (even though he could rescue her in a matter of seconds if he did it himself);
- Batman just leaves the Kryptonite spear laying around, leading to the umpteenth damsel-in-distress moment of the movie.

This is done much better
