I like strings. And I don't really hate "Inside Job" from a compositional standpoint (it's nothing special but it's not terrible). I just hate hate hate the lyrics

It's very bad, but I can't really describe why. I don't know where to start.
the lyrics make it very bad.

I think this is right. I don't hate the lyrics. But they aren't good. They feel very middle-school first drafty to me. It's upsetting if I think they were revised and honed at all.

I choose to believe they were the first lyrics Mike ever wrote and he wrote them as a stream of consciousness exercise with no intention of ever revising. And the band was so pat on the head proud of him that they let him have it.

The lyrics are bad enough, and then the way Eddie sings them is so so so much worse. The intro is terrible too. So long and drawn out which I usually love in a song, but then it leads into...all that.

At one time I thought "I will not lose my faith" was "I might lose my faith", and I was disappointed when I learned the correct line.

Ditto me with "how I choose to feel is Hawaiian"

the lyrics for inside job are no worse than the embarrassment that is "alright," yet people seem to heap praise on that song.

i like inside job just fine. one of my fondest memories of the verona, italy show in 2006 was when they played it for the first song of the encore and the clouds finally parted and you could catch a brief glimpse of the moon.

My wife walked to the restrooms, took a wrong turn, and found herself backstage standing next to Jim James. No one said a word to her.
