This is the only part I agree with. I hope they don't dick with CC and leave it as it's awesome self.
This song is brilliant and understated.

I guess they never finished/ didn't know what to do with it. It sounds kind of like the gibberish singers do barely hinting at the melody and words when they aren't finished with the lyrics. I find it extremely repetitive.
I didn't have time to check it before but I've seen the comments here and honestly the demos didn't surprise me. I like this board because most of regular posters are well articulated in being critical about the band except when some shitty demo pops up then they turn into geniuses. There are things about this song that could be the basis of a passable song. The melody and vocal take need a lot of work and i'm not talking about he hurr-durr with severe sinusitis here. It needs to get interesting sooner than the outro. It needs an arrangement and possibly structural changes.
In my opinion not releasing those 2 songs wasn't a mistake and i wouldn't be surprised if the ever release them it's not going to be the versions we heard. If that happens hundreds of posts here about how they ruined them will follow.

i like it still. not sure if that answers your question, as i'm only one guy.
Don't worry, I represent everyone else here, and we still like it.

I'm pretty much with you on this.

The lyrics seem pretty clear here, as well as in Let it Ride, though. Clear is a relative term with Eddie Vedder, of course, but these in no way sound like he's making mouth noises to just follow along.

Cold Confession Lyrics:
He scared himself, into a trance
took him down river, secretly
He floated out, into the ocean
of his worst dream, of his rough sea
of all the men he could trust
he was not one of them, always hurting himself
the scars unseen, the wounds untold
whatever time had healed, it still took hold
A life washed away, like words in the sand
and when the high tide came, so went his plan
a troubled past, a troubled future
a troubled weight leaning on a bar stool
one strobelight star, he finally saw
navigation towards a brand new course
but to himself the memory clear
cold confession only, that only he could hear
He let himself scream, he let himself cry
let himself reach the other side
there was no christ, there was no cross
just forgiveness, allowed himself
accepted the past, then set it free
oh and it ran off like an animal released
he holds the proof, he holds their star
in his pure arms, in his clear heart
He's safe now, he's back in her breast
he saw his path, and changed it, chased it, at last
That's pretty much what I get out of it, and it's awesome. The only potential change I can think of is "Navigation towards a brand new coast", but it might just be because I like it that way. I don't know if I actually hear it that way, and I can't listen right now... but it fits with the rest of the song.

Yeah, it is was it is. Which makes it nice.... but I really think it's a shell of a much greater song.

melody's good but the verses are so long it becomes repetative.
My favorite part is right after verse one. The rythmic part is magic. Could use a bit more Mike though.

Not sure if anyone else has posted this, but this is one of the few times that Boom really adds something to a Pearl Jam song. The organ is really simple, but it adds some really cool atmosphere to the song.

It's still very much sounding like 'course' to me. However, I'm hearing the previous line now as:
one strobe-like star, he finally saw

I love the vocal take on this. Demo or not. Ed needs to play around with what his voice will allow him to do and what it won't. This is just on the brink of what he can handle and it's fantastic. It would sound more polished in a lower register, sure. But it wouldn't have the same feel. This vocal take communicates something specific and I happen to love it.
This is probably the closest I've heard him get to doing his own version of the kind of thing Tom Waits mastered a long time ago.

I really hope that CC is not on Lightning Bolt as then there is the ever so slight chance that they hook up with Daniel Lanois for an atmospheric album #11. Songs like CC and Falling Down (even oldies like Wash and Sleight Of Hand..hell most of Binaural) would sound amazing with gentle, warm and deep production. I know Lanois isn't right for a lot of artists but I'd love PJ to experiment with a producer, even if it fails and they don't get anything immediate out of the sessions. I want them to get out of the Bo'B comfort zone.
This Dylan track is the sort of production treatment I hear for a CC finished release.

Maybe once they get through this mid life crisis they will slow down and focus again.
