What do you think the words violence and aggression mean
Jorge wrote:Regardless of whether you feel it was justified that was unquestionably an act of violent aggression. That's like the most dispassionate, dictionary-accurate description of what it was
I'll walk not calling it violent back a bit. You're right. That slap was de facto "violent." The language was aggressive. He probably should have been walked out of the building, but I'll stop way short of saying he should have been arrested or even that this was a toxic display of masculinity. I guess that's where the bee in my bonnet comes from. This behavior isn't some new thing. Like spike pointed out, I see it in the bar often (and we train our door staff to de-escalate it by walking people out of the building.) We see worse in baseball games, as I've pointed out. It's the attempt to load the event with deeper meaning of capital V violence, like the kind that escalates into true fisticuffs, that I think is overboard. A man insulted another man's wife, then got slapped by a husband who thought he was doing the right thing in the heat of the moment. Is that really so surprising? This is how the world works.

I didn't want him to be arrested either, but being escorted out by the event's security would've been okay (as well as way funnier)

It's different. He's not just some guy in a bar. He's up there on his pedestal with his platitudes; "I am God's vessel for love" on the very night he SMACKS rock in the face. Hypocritical, ironic, hilarious.

Smith accepting his Oscar in handcuffs would have been amazing.

A small sect of ego driven insecure men at the bar feel like they need to defend their wife’s honor. A majority of well adjusted adults aren’t triggered by stupid petty shit.

Far too much context related considerations to compare this to a bar fight, encounter on the street, etc. And like others said, paired with his acceptance speech afterward, at least in this case makes it subject to absolute scrutiny.

or, while they may be triggered, they possess the capacity at self restraint, knowing their actions could invite bad consequences.

Look guys, I'm not saying Will Smith was the victim here. All I'm asking is how many married men would also react before thinking in a similar situation? It feels like Smith's response was somewhere in between "measured" and truly "aggressive," and I for one find that relatable. Though I personally would be too much of a wimp to even slap a man.

his wife seemed to appreciate what he did.

will smith should have done this backstage, but i don't think his reaction was all that terrible. he could have put chris rock in this hospital if he wanted to. also, good on chris rock to take that slap like a boxing champion. he barely reacted.

Guys, this also has a lot to do with the state of comedy right now, and how people react to humor in general.

Chris Rock handled the whole thing like a champ yeah. Also he gave the award and everything. He is not even pressing charges.
