Higher Truth is one i need to listen again. I think last year i did and i was surprised on how much it changed for me. I couldnt stand it back in the day.

i think his cover of 'a day in the life' is amazing, regardless of its place on classic rock radio playlists. i would not have guessed we would have gotten a gnr cover, but i enjoyed it alot.

yeah, there are moments were he lost some focus. He seemed to need always a group of people to bounce back ideas. But i consider his career brillant really. Im a huge Audioslave fan, EM is a masterpiece and love his 2008 and acoustic tours. Scream was a bold move, and i blame Timbaland for the weaker parts of the album. I actually think his worst solo moment is Carry On.

His whole career post-DOTU is so odd. Outside of King Animal, it feels like a lot of fruitless searching.

Yeah, I think Chris was a great singer for Soundgarden but just not a particular compelling solo artist. I don’t even enjoy Euphoria Morning.

I enjoyed the EM tour, but the album is so terribly depressing. Chris playing with Eleven, throwing in a couple TOTD songs and that awesome Like Suicide cover was just, awesome

EM is great.

I have a soft spot for the Audioslave records. You can create a killer greatest hits record with the bulk of the first album and a smattering of songs from the second and third.

Carry On is awful. Bland, forgettable, middle-of-the-road.

Scream is pretty bad. He was definitely having a mid-life crisis. All the surrounding shit like lip syncing at some fashion show and advertising Verizon phones and cancelling gigs to play at a private gig for designer jeans left a bad taste in my mouth.

Without getting conspiratorial about it, you can tell his outlook on life changed after the first Audioslave record and when he met his second wife.

EM and TOTD are his only great non-Soundgarden records.

Audioslave was ok, and had some good songs. But I rarely play their records now.

Carry on sure is bland but I do like some of the songwriting there.
Scream is what it is....a mistake....
Higher Truth is average. I dont really like his vocals there. Overall a better record than Carry On, but Carry On has the best songs.
King Animal is a by far the tallest tree in his post 2000-output.

Euphoria Morning is wonderful -- conceptually it is all of Soundgarden's sideways musical weirdness filtered through this sort of 70's-AOR lens (or maybe the other way around), but there's really nothing else like it. Every song on that album feels extremely carefully composed and rendered, nothing fruitless or wayward about it at all to me.

Despite Tom Morello's more Harlem-Globetrotter-y tendencies, the songwriting in Audioslave was simpleton-level stuff compared to what CC had been doing previously and I think it kind of signaled a turning point for his writing -- more basic chord progressions, less challenging rhythms/time signatures, etc. His voice always sounded pretty good to me but a lot of the things that always felt distinctive about his songwriting were sanded over pretty aggressively in his last 10-15 years of output. There are some good -- and even a few very good -- songs peppered throughout, but toward the end, with Higher Ground and his solo shows and some of his soundtrack work, I think he was shooting for this weathered-but-wise singer-songwriter thing that never really felt natural. Not entirely unlike EV, who started down a similar path around the same time.

I know im in a minority here, but Audioslave is awesome to me. Out Of Exile is the weak link maybe, but the first one and last one are masterpieces. Its a way different beast than Soundgarden, and rightfully so.

Everything post Carry On has this overpowered soaring vocal on it. King Animal is ok, but 'Higher Truth' really suffers from it.

I get it, I've often thought the same--much of it I feel (at least for his solo albums post EM) likely have to do with the producer. Lilywhite, Timbaland, BO'B. Not the best tracker record IMO. I thought King Animal was fine though. There's a ton of the vocals you describe on HT, though I do feel there are few hidden gems on that album (namely Worried Moon, Through The Window, Misery Chain). Worried Moon lyrics are very hard to listen to now given the subject matter...
