Season 7 is where it really goes off the rails for me. I'd say everything before that is pretty much "golden era."

Here's the list I put together back in October; I shrunk the first 4 seasons down to 12-13 episodes each. I may have cut out some good episodes, but I definitely also cut out the stinkers ("3," "Space," etc.):

Fire
Beyond the Sea
EBE
Darkness Falls
Tooms
The Erlenmeyer Flask

Season 2 - 13 Episodes
Little Green Men
The Host
Sleepless
Duane Barry
Ascension
One Breath
Die Hand Die Verletzt
Colony
End Game
Humbug
F. Emasculata
Soft Light
Anasazi

Season 3 - 13 episodes
The Blessing Way
Paper Clip
Clyde Bruckman
Oubliette
Nisei
731
Piper Maru

Nice list and thanks for putting it together! I may run this by the Mrs. to see if this approach will help get her back into the X-files. A few years ago she was up for watching the series (especially during the fall / winter), but we were watching every episode. I think a truncated approach may help us pick back up. We lost steam mainly by watching other shows, and left off somewhere in Season 2 (I've seen most episodes of the series, wife hasn't). The amount of episodes was also a little overwhelming for her. Most HBO/Showtime/Netflix Originals series are like 12 episodes, while the network shows are 20 something episodes.

Oh, and my favorite "monster of the week" episode is 'The Host'; that one gives me the Heebie-jeebies.

Is that the one with the sewer monster. That one is great.

Darin Morgan--X-Files writer of episodes like "Humbug," "Clyde Bruckman," and next week's new episode--was inside the monster suit for that episode.

That is one of my all time favorites. Definitely a creeper.

MULDER: Get this, Scully. The lab analysis from the first bit of fiber that was found just came back. It's lace.

SCULLY: Chantilly lace?

MULDER: You know what I like.
And that's from what I consider to be the best episode of the entire series!
Right. And?
It's just a cheesy, groan-y sort of line. It's nearly a dad joke. Maybe your wife was talking about a different type of cheese, but that sort was always my favorite.
Yeah, that kinda stuff made The X-Files (and Mulder specifically) for me. I love that stuff. She's talking about something else.

I haven't watched the new ones yet, plan to this weekend. I did watch "Truth" last night though and meh. That court room stuff was kinda boring.

That second episode was great. It was scary, gross, funny, heartfelt and had a great mix of interesting science and batshit craziness. I didn't think the first episode was an unmitigated disaster, but this felt much more like they were back on the horse.
