Hes one of my big beefs with these films..they cast him far too young.

Watch the extended edition last night. Definitely a noticeable improvement. Beorn and Bard are much more memorable characters now, and the whole Laketown sequence feels much more complete. It also just made me realize how superb the whole Erebor section of the film is. The dwarves getting emotional when they first enter, the slow build to Smaug's reveal, the gold spilling everywhere - really awesome.

Someone remind me - what happened when Gandalf arrived at Dol Guldur in the theatrical cut? I know Thrain wasn't there, so did he meet someone else? I'm having trouble remembering.

He wanders around alone casting spells, then gets attacked by orcs and sort of force lead to Sauron, then imprisoned..

Oh wow, this version makes a lot more sense then.

Yeah, it felt really underpresented before...

I detect a distinct note of sarcasm here, but honestly I DO think that sequence was very underrepresented before. Especially in terms of the Master and the political stuff.

If I had the means to do so, I would love to edit all six Middle-earth movies into one chronologically assembled, 22-hour extravaganza.

Seems like a weird decision to not show Smaug AT ALL in the trailer.

Oh maybe they will pull a Pirates of the Caribbean and kill the monster offscreen between the two movies.

Nah, theyve spent too much time setting up that one remaining black arrow to take him out..Plus Jackson wouldnt stray from canon that much.

Needs Smaug offed in order to get to the battle for Erebor..

Oh boy oh boy oh boy

I've said all along that we won't really be able to judge this trilogy until the third film since, unlike the LOTR, it was never broken up into a set of stories with distinct breaks. Though they are two stand alone films, each were largely devoid of a real climax with any kind of resolution or major transformational moment for the characters. Instead we've had 6 hours of setup, rather than 2 complete movies paving the way for a third. Hopefully the payoff justifies the build

It's all looking a bit overwrought emotions and tense.
Trailers are no way to fairly judge, I just hope it's a good ending.

All six movies are overwrought. These are not subtle films
