Paul was always more influential on John's songs that John was on his. I think this might be because John didn't care as much about Paul's tunes. Whatever Paul wants to do, let him do it. Paul on the other hand was all about making any Beatles song as good as it can be...regardless if he wrote it or not. Paul's influence on some of John's songs like Tomorrow Never Knows (created the tape loops), A Day In The Life ("conducts" the orchestra, wrote the middle section), and Strawberry Fields (plays the mellotron) can't be understated. Not to mention all the times Paul played lead guitar because he's simply better than George (Taxman, Good Morning Good Morning, USSR among others) Aside from suggesting use of brass in Mother Nature's Son and suggesting not changing a Hey Jude lyric, John really didn't give much creative input to Paul...at least as far as I know.

One last thought: You know what song is most telling of Paul's obsession with making great Beatles records? The Ballad Of John & Yoko. Think about it. Paul very much disliked Yoko during this period. Why would he ever want to play piano, bass, and drums on a tune that's all about John's love for Yoko? Cause it's a good tune. That's all Paul cares about. George has been quoted saying that he'd have shown up for the session if it was called The Ballad of John, Yoko, and George. But Paul? If you got a tune that needs recording, he'll be there.

I've always thought Paul's best works on the bass were for John and George's songs.

I can see that. In addition to the above (Paul wrote the chorus to A Day... as well) being true, I think Paul was more comfortable experimenting and trying strange things on other people's stuff because it involved little personal risk. With his own songs, he wanted them to "pop" so big that he couldn't do the cool stuff. Hence the majority of his solo output.

Also, for slowing it way down to a groove and coming up with those great bass and keyboard parts that redefined it, I see Come Together as being as much a Paul song as a John one.

Though my favorite bass on a Beatles song is probably old brown shoe, and I think George played that himself.

I truly wish I understood this post. but to answer your question, the part I understand, I'm pretty sure the musical talent we can look back through the years at wouldnt exist were it not for the Beatles
