I dont jump on them for this at all, theres a funny story from i think 87 or 89 where they were one of the biggest contributors to the exchequer after Guinness, and Larrys dad (who has the same name as him) receiving a beyond collosal tax bill and them having to write and explain there were two larry mullens at that address, something like that..theyve paid their dues in my mind..

i do have problems with them not having ever supported irish bands or that community and upcoming talent(they really havent apart from larry) a bit like Bill gates, they live here, do their work here, but dont takr part here.
Ive heard Bonos reasons for that and its ultimate bono bullshit, but if thats how he wants or sees it has to be, fair enough.

A lot of the reviews crapping on it spend a third of their time fixating on the release, a third of their time making fun of U2's need to be important, and a third of their time bemoaning the lack of the pretentious mega songs that coincide with exactly that attitude.

says more about journalists having to have their pound of flesh than the topic at hand...

ie-any pearl jam review..show me one doesnt mention that other band

While a flawed record, it does make me think U2 can still have something worth saying as long as they tell the right kinds of stories

Not in this thread, my friend. I am glad to hear yours and other generally positive reviews. I'm saving it for a run this weekend, so I can listen straight through without noise from the family.

Maybe I need to listen to No Line again...it's been a while. But I don't remember it being as melodically engaging as this one. I also don't have any strong memories about the topicality of it, and a huge part of what is making this a nice listen for me is the lack of Bono preaching or pretending he can still pull off the Achtung thing...and the toning down of stupid U2 bombast. I don't get any of that typical U2 "statement for the ages" crap, here, or the absent adventure fearfulness of All That You Can't

Except for this album - I don't think I've felt compelled to listen to a U2 album all the way through since Pop. Am I missing anything?

it doesnt have to be melodic

My biggest beef is with the artwork. Too over the top.
