Desire, BOTT and Hard Rain are the albums of my childhood. I sang along to those albums apparently.

I have a hard time ranking Dylan albums. So much good stuff. There is a Dylan album for every emotion I feel on a regular basis. Not sure I can say that about any other artist I love. It's almost like he isn't real. He had a few albums in the 60's and 70's that played like greatest hits compilations. I wrote a paper in college about Bob Dylan's work. I will try and upload it. I got an A.

Ryan Adams said once in an interview that Dylan is like a mythical figure and he almost never wants to meet him. I see his point. What do you talk about with someone like that? Love him or hate him....Dylan is just a one in a million artist. He's just on a level nobody else is on. The way the masses talk about the Beatles is how I feel about Dylan.

Simple Twist of Fate and Shelter from the Storm are fantastic. I love mid 70's Dylan/Band basement tapes stuff. My Dad Saw Dylan and the Band in 74. You Ain't Goin' Nowhere was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar.

61 is the pinnacle of his poetic surrealist bent. It paints an abstract version of America so malformed and complete as to be barely interpretable. Highway 61 is a journey through an absurdist America with one final goal: get out. And in the end, when we finally crack past the border to what we hope is something better, we find a place filled to burst with the cultural mutant icons we just left behind...a place so familiar that they're even selling postcards of the hanging, just like they did in Minnesota.

Highway 61 is easily his purest artistic statement...the Bob Dylan equivalent to Exile, Vitalogy or Rain Dogs.

It also is not heavy on harmonica....and pretty cynical.

I'm not the biggest Coldplay fan (though I dig their first two albums and latest album) but Chris Martin said in an interview a few years ago where there is like a month of time per year where he listens to nothing but Dylan. I thought that was cool.

Excellent post. I don't agree with all of it (a lot of it though) but it's well thought out.

BOTT has been my favorite Dylan album for years but I might be ready to admit that Highway 61 is the best.

RM refers to me that way because it's an old inside joke. I don't really mind when it happens on RM because of the joke and because it's typically an endearing thing from those that do. So, it's totally fine here. Please feel free to continue calling me Joey.
