I agree that "hey, this part or song sounds like this band" is absolutely a musical shorthand, one I've definitely used myself. That being said, I think the bolded...

I've definitely lobbed that critique at PJ before, but I don't think that's a critique I have here. I think it sounds a bit pedestrian as opposed to derivative.
That being said, I still like it cause I like the song quite a bit. It's amazing how much having a good song can overcome other issues.

I thought it was pretty decent. I like the snare sound (but bear in mind I love St. Anger). Pretty good use of Eddie's modern (weak) voice.

I thought about Lars' snare on St. Anger as well. Love that album! So raw and vulnerable. Great stuff.

I turned it off after 37 seconds. I'm honestly not trying to be a PJ PRAMG hater as seems so trendy about these parts either. I just really thought it sucked and chose to just listen to something else instead.
For a band that has put out so much music that I truly LOVE it astounds me that they are then also able to record stuff like this that grabs me not at all in any way shape nor form.

im not saying you would have liked it, but its hard to take an opinion seriously if you cant even take the time to finish a 2 and a half minute song

The ONLY thing I liked about it was the snare. Love that ring.

Nice hearing a new Pearl Jam song. Doesn't happen often these days. I wouldn't consider it a modern classic though.

Since there's a separate thread for this, I'd like to add my 2 cents.
Good song. I hadn't heard the original before I heard PJ's cover. I liked PJ's take. Generally, the two and half minutes punk rock song is probably one of my least favourite things by this band but I thought this was good because Ed's singing was not as rushed as it usually is in this type of song. His voice sounded clear and powerful and he showed good commitment on the high notes. The song itself is quite nice too.

I assumed this would be another boring uke number but was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a boring punk song.

To put my comments in context, I'm the guy who thinks LB (and Backspacer) is a great album and Binaural/Riot Act are the band's worst. They are also the albums on which Ed sounds the least inspired to me. I'd much rather he sound engaged like he does here or on the last two (actually, three) records. I know this is an unpopular opinion on RM but I seriously don't want their next album to sound anything like Binaural or Riot Act, musically or vocally. Just slightly less of the 2 1/2 minutes punk rockers that we saw on the last two albums and some more fully fleshed out >=3.5 minutes songs would be great.

In that context: The good thing about this song, is that if they release an album like this, then LB won't be their worst album anymore.

I really don't like the Loretta Lynn hiccup thing Ed does in this song.
