I was searching for Amnesiac discussion after listening to it a bunch in the last few days, and I stumbled upon this absolute howler.

Amnesiac: I have to be in a highly intellectual mood.

My day is ruined.

As for the album, I think it has some incredible highs, but peters out considerably toward the end. It's too patchy to be rated above Kid A. Anyone who rates it above Kid A is lying to be different.

I actually put Amnesiac above Kid A, and it's not to be different, nor is it due to a superior intellect.

I just like it more. That's it.

Thinking back... and maybe we've all discussed this before... but it's possible the shift from OKC -> Kid A at the time at least felt so dramatic, almost a betrayal of guitar rock, that I never gave it fair shake. In retrospect it was a clear evolution of their sound, but I'm a bitter bastard and Muse's "Origin of Symmetry" filled the gap where Radiohead had been.

so here's my thing with amnesiac. while i find the songs more accessible and definitely more straightforward and listener friendly, i can't help but think that they are inferior simply by virtue of being left off of kid a. i know that the kid a and amnesiac songs were all recorded together, and that the amnesiac songs are not the ones left on the cutting room floor. the band didn't intend to make two albums while recording. but because kid a came out first, and these amnesiac songs were not included, i immediately think that they're not up to par, and i unintentionally hear them that way. it's just hard for me to separate them from that context.

I think I can understand this. It's fascinating and cool that you're like aware enough to articulate it that well.

Of course, as we all know, it's subjective. Like what you like. While I certainly don't think Kid A is a bad record, I think I just appreciate the overall atmosphere and cohesion of Amnesiac more. I'm not sure it's even about "which songs are better" for me. It' the overall album experience.

I'm sorry Chris, but that's [redacted]. Who cares if they thought the songs weren't good enough to be on Kid A? The strength of a tune like "The Pyramid Song" confirms that they're either wrong in that assessment, or these songs were left off of Kid A for other reasons. It could have been thematic, contextual, general tone, emotional attachment, a producer or exec who doesn't know what they're talking about... anything!

I am reminded of when Dave Grohl tried to tell the world that In Your Honor was the Foo Fighters album you should pick up if you could only choose one. Nice try, guy.

Once an artist releases their music, it is no longer theirs to rate. It's on the individual to determine how important said art is, as only their experience matters. Defaulting to the mind set of "b-side, outtake = inferior" is ridiculous.

I think you glossed over the part where I agree with you on this but I nevertheless unconsciously feel that way about the songs.

Fwiw, pyramid song is a top 5 Radiohead song for me.
