Good stuff. I've actually been looking some bands in that vein lately, since I discovered The Lapse/The Van Pelt (my last 2 picks, check them out if you're unfamiliar with them). I'll be downloading some of their stuff for sure.

I really liked that Lapse song, I'll check out The Van Pelt in a minute.

Obviously, I went in a different direction with this tournament. I knew the alt-rock stuff would be well covered (it was) and I wanted to give some attention to rap, which experienced a revolution and creative explosion in the 1990s comparable to what was happening with alt-rock/grunge/metal/etc. There were some great rap picks by other teams though and I was glad to see artists like Nas, Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre and Snoop, A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Ghostface, Outkast, the Fugees, and others get some love. I hated omitting Public Enemy because they were one of the most important rap bands of the 1990s and Fear of a Black Planet is my favorite album by them. But otherwise, going with an all-rap team took some of the pressure off. None of the picks on my list were taken by others and there was plenty of good stuff to choose from. Rap (especially gangsta rap) is sometimes discounted as a musical art form, but once you scratch the surface, there's some real artistry taking place. I realize I'll be knocked out in round one, but I hope some of you learned a thing or two from my long-winded write ups and maybe discovered something of interest.

The only real debate I had was what to do about country music, which also experienced a burst of creativity and innovation in the 1990s that was, in some ways, bigger than what happened in any other genre. I considered going with a half rap/half country team, but I felt like it would do justice to neither side. But Garth Brooks was the best selling artist of the 1990s and is absolutely one of the great musicians/songwriters/performers of our generation. I'd say he's the biggest omission from us as a collective, although I know many of you will scoff at that. (He's really good if you get past the biggest hits, and he's one of the best live performers I've ever seen.) Also, Dixie Chicks would be somewhere near the very top of my list of great 1990s artists. They're not only fantastic songwriters and performers, they are super serious musicians who can hold their own with anyone. Alan Jackson is another country artist who did freaking amazing work in the 1990s.

It'll be interesting to see how the voting goes. There are some ridiculously strong teams.
