It certainly wasn't to decide for us what speech of the president is allowed to trickle down to us lowly peasants.
The role of the media is to simply report verbatim whatever President Syphilis says. If they were to ignore him he would have no other way of making his voice heard.

"P-p-please, Mrs. Stahl, may I have a little more words from the President, if it pleases you? I'll vote a straight dem ticket, ma'am. I'll do anything you ask. Oh! Thank you! Thank you, Miss! You are ever so generous! Thank you!"

But their job isn’t to act as a megaphone for their guests; it’s to speak truth to power. Seems to me she did a fine job of that in her interview (based on reports and brief clips I’ve seen).

I don't know what kind of crack you smoke to think that the media's job is to speak truth to power, but I want none of it.
What I do with corporate media opinions of what information is safe for me to hear:

They agreed to an interview. They can ask all the tough questions they want. They can fight with him all they want. But to unilaterally say "nope! No sorry, we're not talking about this. It's off the table..."
Who the fuck are these people? Who do they think they are to dictate that? Why do you respect them so much? Because they have a degree in journalism? They have no more authority over what's allowed to be talked about than my favorite bikini clad barista down at the Vancouver Twin Peaks coffee hut.
Clowns! I'm surrounded by clowns!

This is a needlessly cynical take. Just because the majority of news outlets have turned into clickbait whores, let’s not disparage the handful of remaining legitimate outlets that exist.

fair play, there are still journalists out there who are search for the truth no matter how uncomfortable it makes their editors and readers.

no, there is no gray area here. all journalists are self serving and corrupt. burt said so, and he said it, so it's a fact because it was said by someone.

More than 700 esteemed economists, including more than a half dozen Nobel Prize winners, have signed an open letter urging voters to reject Donald Trump at the ballot box in this election.
'In just one term in office, Donald Trump has rendered the United States unrecognizable, and has faced no consequences for doing so,' the letter reads. 'He has carried out a sustained assault on democratic institutions, put his family members in charge of critical government functions during a pandemic, called for his political opponents to be thrown in prison, normalized corruption, and weakened the economic recovery with selfish and reckless behavior. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that the electorate do what no one else can: reclaim your democracy by voting to remove Donald Trump from office.'

Who knew there were 700 esteemed economists. I didn't think there was that much esteem to go around. I hope we have enough esteem left for journalists.

Did either candidate even mention our dangerously low esteem reserves at last night's debate?

Your shared cynicism around all this is a sad bummer. Side with the environment, or the free market, or science, or free speech, or whatever ideals you believe these candidates most closely represent. But the "nothing means anything anymore lol lol lol" response is weak-ass shit. Put a fucking stake in the ground and stand by it.
