I don't like him or Tatum all that much for these super max, but I think they are good enough to win a title and I credit the org for taking the gamble.
Brown was super max or bust, and would never have returned to Boston if they hadn't offered this deal. He dislikes the city and has taken shots at it. Very sensitive "super" star.
But, this is basketball and not hockey so it is what it is with these divas.

Yeah, tying contracts and max pay to honors voted on by media is probably not a reasonable thing to do at this point.
Does what you just said serve as a response to my idea:
my play would have been to tell him we love you and want you here but we can't give you the full bag. Make a substantial but much lower offer (5/$200m) and when he rejects it, give him permission to seek a trade. My bet is that nobody out there would be willing to give Boston real assets AND offer him the biggest contract in the game. At this point Boston could increase their offer a bit perhaps (5/$230 or 240) and he might be willing to sign it after seeing that he wasn't getting $300m anywhere else.

I think Boston negotiated this deal years ago and was comfortable going super max all the way and not messing around, especially after having him in all those trade rumors the last few years.
I like your plan, but I feel like it would have been too big a gamble for the team. I dunno, it's hard because I don't really love their two superstars lol.

Now I'm gonna add to my scenario. I hear that and maybe it's right. But what do you think is the best offer he could have gotten elsewhere? What if Boston was the highest but it wasn't the supermax? That wouldn't be tenable?

On the bright side, a few days before all this he partnered with Red Bull to rebuild and redesign a bunch of bball courts in Boston. Public ones in tough neighborhoods.

If I was Jaylen Brown and already making fuck off money even before the supermax, I legit would have requested to sign for a lesser amount, say $40 mill a season, flat.
More money than I could ever hope to spend anyway, leaves some cap space for the team to continue to build, and is self-aware enough to understand that I'm not the actual greatest player in the NBA.
Also, nice legacy move and allows you the best chance to play on a contending team in the future.
I mean seriously, $200 million over 5 years isn't enough?
I'm glad Boston stayed with him (even if I was calling for his head after the Heat series) but I'm disappointed that he had to cost so much. I don't believe he is a supermax calibre player and don't believe he ever truly will be. He's damn good, but he ain't that guy.

I wish their was a "designated player" rule in the NBA that allowed one homegrown player's salary to only count for 60-80 percent of the cap.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. I feel like the current system really penalizes good team building and keeping the veterans you developed.

They had a Celtics beat writer on the radio the other day. Can't remember which one, but he said the NBA expects to grow revenues by a lot as a result of a new TV deal. The cap is then expected to just keep rising, meaning the Brown contract will eat up less of the overall budget.

That's obviously the best argument for the deal not becoming punitive, but we'll see. Like I said the Celtics were in a tough spot as legit contender and Brown being eligible for that contract. It's madness because he isn't close to the best player in the league and yet that's how he's being paid.

Personally, I'd like to see all these complex formulas and max contracts that each guy can earn based on years and awards and previous contracts and all that go away. The max has a funny way of helping some guys (like Brown) get paid way more than they otherwise would and it keeps down the few guys that would generate true bidding wars.
I'm just thinking out loud here, I'm sure there'd be unanticipated consequences of what I just said.
