Yeah, very cool.
I still think the band have treated Dave abysmally. He's easily the band's most iconic drummer, it reflects so poorly on them that they've extended no public goodwill to him in all these years.

So it's a Don Draper "that's what the money's for!" situation.
I don't know, I think they hugely minimise his contribution to their success at a really crucial time for the band.

The ‘96 Grammy speech and then this performance are the only acknowledgments I can think of offhand, though there might be other instances.Birds in Hell wrote:Yeah, very cool.

Jack still has the bounce (he was in RHCP!), it's just a different bounce than Dave's.

Oh, definitely, but I just mean to contrast both Dave and Jack to Matt, who has absolutely zero funk in his playing.
Dave and Jack were different drummers but there's definitely a continuum of groove that runs through that whole period, even if Jack's groove was definitely more relaxed and less precise.

Matt has funk. It’s just a different kind, as in, “Man, these socks smell funky.”

Re: Pearl Jam Videos
The funny thing is that both Cropduster and You Are are Matt's songs, which is a perfect illustration of how they broke the band when they brought Matt in. His style doesn't work for the kind of songs the other guys write (or their back catalogue) and only really feels natural on his own songs.tragabigzanda wrote:It's frustrating because it took them until Riot Act to really figure out how to apply Matt's sound to the band's music (I love Binaural, but Matt's role seems to be more of "it works" rather than "it slays.") And then they immediately started simplifying their music! Like instead of saying "Whoa, songs like Cropduster and You Are are kind of a cool new direction for us," they instead said "Hey we can just write straightforward rock music like Bruce Springsteen now."Birds in Hell wrote:Oh, definitely, but I just mean to contrast both Dave and Jack to Matt, who has absolutely zero funk in his playing.
Oh well, they had a good thing going for a while there.

So it’s settled then. Bring back Dave A!tragabigzanda wrote:I always forget that You Are is a Matt song, because I always associate it with Stone playing with the drum machine/guitar setupBirds in Hell wrote:The funny thing is that both Cropduster and You Are are Matt's songs, which is a perfect illustration of how they broke the band when they brought Matt in. IMO, it's not Matt that's the problem, but the rest of the band.Birds in Hell wrote: The funny thing is that both Cropduster and You Are are Matt's songs, which is a perfect illustration of how they broke the band when they brought Matt in. He is clearly at a level above the other 4 and they cannot relate or keep up with it.
Especially Mike. I don't think I've ever heard him play one of Matt's songs correctly. Ever.

Re: Pearl Jam Videos
Probably bc it requires concentration and not shimmying across the stage with your guitar behind your head while you point at random people in the crowd
