That’s just how ambitious sociopaths behave. The women empowerment angle just felt like pandering.

the "women empowerment angle" wasn't supposed to be sincere; she was using it because it helped to create her persona

Yeah I just dunno about that. It seemed like she was sociopathic up until the point where she genuinely loved her partner and didn’t wanna take shit from men. It’s almost like they’re saying it’s just what you gotta do to get ahead in this world.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Loved it. McCarthy was so great.

I think abusers can be and do all of the above, they're complicated just like everyone is

I guess. Just would’ve felt more realistic if she didn’t give a shit about any cause or anyone but herself. I mean, she’s proven to have the ability to love others fully, even enough to risk her own life for her... she must not be sociopathic then, just out for blood... because it’s just what she has to do to succeed.

It’s like, what’s the point of the movie? For the first bit it seems like a fun character study about evil selfish people. But by the end it’s like this is what happens if you care a lot about yourself and significant others.

The last couple pages have been kinda hard to follow. Which MCU movie are you talking about here?

I do agree that the message is a little muddled in places, even if we disagree on which places, so it doesn't work entirely as pointed satire (and that's a problem with vast swathes of modern media calling itself "satire")

In which places do you think the message is muddled?

I dunno.. just saying.. it would have captivated me much more if she were just an absolutely evil piece of shit.. maybe she could have sacrificed her lover or something horrible as opposed to being some kind of martyr for ambition .. I’m hung up on it cause I was really digging it until about halfway through .. now I don’t even wanna see it again with wife

mostly with Peter Dinklage's part; I wanted him to fleece her for all she was worth but then they joined forces and I was disappointed

I think the villain through martyrdom angle was effective because it literally happens; there are care workers who do that and get away with it by being the perfect picture of goodness

in terms of loving people and also being a piece of shit, that's also realistic
I believed both of those things about Walter White, for example

Walter White was much more well rounded. His character made sense. She just didn’t make sense to me. Needed more evil to round her out.
