I'm not necessarily impressed by O'Brien's resume post-2000. Has anyone listened to any of the other albums he's produced recently (especially since around the 2009 Backspacer era) to see if they are all overly compressed? Is it just his style to squeeze songs til they're shit?

I remember he was asked about it in PJ radio, and said it was a industry thing. Rick Rubin´s new albums are also pretty brickwalled.

After my buddy showed me the effort that Porcupine Tree puts in to the recording and sound quality of their albums (and the result) , any other excuse is just either laziness, lack of ability or not caring.

Yeah, "it's an industry thing" is a terrible excuse. A major cop-out. Pearl Jam are an independent band now, effectively free agents without domestic label backing. They could bypass the "industry standard" and put out a record that lived up to their purported audiophile inclinations if they really wanted to.

Yep, like the whole thing is a huge ego trip. The job of a music producer / sound technician, should be to make a band sound the best they can be on their own terms, to give them what they want. I can't see how it's his job to 'make a product' at all. He just has the tools to help the band make one.

I think the important part of that statement was the "beat the demo" part. It's very hard to impossible to replicate the immediacy and rawness of a good demo. If you come in with a sketch idea you're not spending all your time trying to recreate some magic that isn't possible to recreate. I bet McP or Kevin Davis could speak to this better than I can.

Caveat: I don't know what I'm talking about. But I can't help thinking that a great producer could do this if they really wanted to. What Brendan is really asking to do is to help write various bands' songs. No?
