Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
One hot take — How this album ages might depend a lot on how the production of Power of Right, The Dark, Good and Evil, and maybe Rose of Jericho ages. I like those songs, (and maybe love The Dark right now), but can imagine a time in the future when, altogether, they don't sit so well.
Another hot take — Picture is the worst thing here, not The Haves.

Once again, I can offer zero excuses and only sincere apologies.
I hope you like Earthling but even if you don't, I'll be interested to hear your thoughts. If you want to share them.

I agree with this. In context, The Haves actually works way better than Picture.Jaeti wrote:Another hot take — Picture is the worst thing here, not The Haves.

Im not sure he's going for "rage" though...tragabigzanda wrote:Lol… I think the hard songs are where things tend to fall apart. The sense of lightness and playfulness gets muddied, and the production calls to mind the worst of late 90s radio rock. The guitars sound awful and Ed’s rage feels a little phoned in.
The non-hard rock genre experiments are where things really open up for me.
Edit: I was lol’ing Strat, not epilogue

Agreed.
I don't hear a lot of rage on this album.

I couldnt even make it thru The Haves when it was released...and i tried 3 times. Its a weird thing but within the context of the album i don't actually hate it. Its definitely a bottom 2 song on the album, but i could easily see myself listening to this one for quite some time and never having the urge to skip a song.

The lyrics for Good and Evil are pretty....aggressive....but im still not sure its "rage", and even on that track his vocals are more playful and snarky than rageful. Theyre kind of perfect.McParadigm wrote:Goodness, no.

Are these actual song titles Eddie Vedder and his band chose to run with?Jaeti wrote:One hot take — How this album ages might depend a lot on how the production of Power of Right, The Dark, Good and Evil, and maybe Rose of Jericho ages. Same, but I'd give it a 3 or 3.5 overall. There are some real earworms here.tragabigzanda wrote:I give the spirit of this album a solid five stars, even if a track-by-track breakdown might average out to more like a 2.75

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
To be fair, I agree that the production is lacking. But like trag I'd say it bothers me in some spots more than others. But none of it is a dealbreaker for me.

I need to listen to The Dark again. I've already forgotten how that goes and y'all seem to really dig it. Maybe I'm confusing it with another song? I listened to it without the tracklist in front of me.

Ditto. I also dont get the sense that there's alot of rage in the man period these days. Sadness maybe, but not necessarily rage.epilogue wrote:Agreed.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I do not like the production. Or, whatever blanket that is put over the songs. There are production choices and flourishes i like, but overall sound I do not. However, i think the songs absolutely stand on their own and production is not the first thing I think about.
Replacements - Tim. Worst sounding album ever. Maybe one of my favorite albums of all time.
