If you want to say that Will Smith was wrong, or that violence as a reaction to comedy (or speech) is absurd, is cruel, is pathetic, etc….I’m all for it. But I can’t tell you how stupid a person looks when they (I honestly hope pretend) to believe that this is going to set a “precedence” that will change the degree to which comedians can feel safe.

Don’t do that. That’s ridiculous. That’s beyond parody. And you can easily argue the wrongness of what happened without inventing stakes.

No-name comedians face on-stage aggressions from time to time, and then they get back on stage and do it all again. Children go back to school after a shooting, for fuck’s sake.

I only brought up the "precedent" point because I heard several comedians discussing it. I think it'd only be somewhat of a concern if the overwhelming backlash against Will Smith weren't so strong. Pretty sure we're all relaxing at this point, at which it's clear he has no real support for what he did. Comedians stand strong!

Imagine not expressing your opinion because of your skin color or gender lol. One life and I'm supposed to spend it in a state of neurotic anxiety over whether or not I'm properly centering this or that identity group? I think not.

Yeah this is all deeply silly. If anything, the censors will continue to lose ground every time the consequences of their moronic ideology manifest themselves. Like I've said: we're winning. The cancellers have become the cancelled!

Comedians are empowered a tiny bit. Will Smith movies will be delayed by a few months. None of this is a big deal.

maybe Sykes thought the joke was fine, maybe her main concern is hosting the Oscars and making sure it runs smoothly
