Regardless of what you think of the setlists & performances, 2006 was the last time they were really tight & focused. Since then it's been a slop-fest.

I've seen multiple shows every year from 98 on (until this year), and 06 was my favorite year of that run. Then 03. The 98. After that I couldn't really rank em

I caught one show in 2000 and 2003 so I can't judge those years, but I never listen to boots from that era so...

For me it has more to do with the declining quality of Ed's live vocal performances than anything else. I think the band is still really good live, if not a little safe, but still pretty tight given the catalog they pull from for each tour.
