Why Mank?
well, i loved how it was framed, the photography, acting. Also its telling a story (dont care if its fictional or not) that trascend the hot topics of today´s world.

I find that refreshing.

Wait does this have anything to do with the Drive By Truckers song that starts with that line?? (Checkout time in Vegas)
I'm genuinely curious about this... "Checkout Time..." is based on the of the life of a dude (Scott Baxendale) who builds guitars for DBT. He wrote a film script about the time he got busted in Vegas and sent it to Johnny Depp with a custom guitar, I believe. This movie sounds different but the title must be an intentional nod.

Spoiler: show
Bloody nose, empty pockets
A rented car with trunk full of guns
It ain't true that the sun don't rise in Vegas
I seen it once
She might have been somebody's mama
He might have been somebody's son
But if the sun went down on them that night in Vegas
Their luck was good as gone
They'll be after me by the time the buffet closes
Making sure Sin City still shines brighter than creation's dark
If all you need is a badge to take what's left from those who lost it
A badge ain't no more real than bullets are
A bloody nose, empty pockets
A rented car with trunk full of guns
Checkout time is sundown in Las Vegas
But it only rises once
Oh I dunno. It is set in Vegas and is uhh about the same kind of shit, more or less.

Gotcha. I don't agree with any of that but especially the last part. But I'm glad you got something out of it. I wanted to like it so badly.

Obviously I would.

But it's not surprising that we don't see it the same way.

I'm trying to watch more movies this year (I'm already up to 12! More than all of last year), but my schedule makes it difficult to do anything in one sitting, so anything I watch gets split into multiple viewings over multiple days. I'm on like day 4 of La Dolce Vita and I'm only halfway through. Looking forward to single-sitting movies sometime this summer.

Going back to Alamo Drafthouse is probably the thing I'm most looking forward to in our return to real life.

I guess I would say that if I see the movie as kind of a genre spin on feminism/#metoo, it's pretty fucking cynical about the end game of that fantasy.

I think this is actually a totally fine way to watch movies, and sometimes preferable. I didn't really like theaters before the pandemic so if anything this past year has allowed me justification to watch even more movies at home. I think I'm at 47 now?

The word fantasy is key here.

Exactly??
Spoiler: show
The movie tells us that the vigilante revenge fantasy against male sexual violence which it presents is only achievable through self-annihilation. Who's left standing at the end of this movie? It's not Cassie. It's a biting satire and brilliantly executed but it's not exactly hopeful about the prospects of #metoo. Even if you move the analysis to the level of audience reception--that the act of watching this fantasy is going to unmask in the kind of normalized sexual violence we see in cases like Brock Turner and "nice guys", etc.--it still doesn't offer much of a promise for how to fix a society so articulated around male desire.

Why does it need to be hopeful?

I think it's fair to question whether we can use the "ladiest lady movie"--or to use real language, the most feminist movie you can think of--to describe a film that essentially says, "there's no escape."

But no, I don't think it needs to be hopeful.

Not sure I'd agree that's what it's saying.

But it's a lot more complex regardless.
