After spooning my own feces into my mouth because I am so incompetent I can't distinguish between it and food, I managed to bang the right combination of keys on my compuder with my gnarled paws to bring up an article that I had someone read for me because I can't read and it said this:

MARCH 25, 2020

As the number of people infected with the coronavirus surpasses 450,000 worldwide, and more than one billion are locked in their homes, scientists are wrestling with one of the most pressing questions of the pandemic: Do people who survive the infection become immune to the virus?

The answer is a qualified yes, with some significant unknowns. That’s important for several reasons.

People who are confirmed to be immune could venture from their homes and help shore up the work force until a vaccine becomes available, for example. In particular, health care workers who are known to be immune could continue to care for the severely ill.

Number 1! Number 1!

My data is showing that the US isn't number 1 just yet. One more day and you will overtake Italy, two more days and you'll overtake China. Then number 1.

I'm used to big disappointment. I'm a Cleveland fan. Maybe next pandemic!

It’s ok. The US healthcare system is totally ready for this.

He's not wrong, we do need such a test and scientists are working on it as well as a vaccine. They need to find people who have developed antibodies to the virus.
That being said, there have been stories of people being reinfected, so antibodies may not equal immunity. They need to test that too.

So do you want to acknowledge the point that I was actually trying to make? Or just keep fucking whining about Trump and wealthy people

-> If 80% are mild cases, and shitloads of us have already been exposed, 80% of that shitload can probably go back to work and help save this economy
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the reason is that we're not sure at this point that we actually are immune after having it. Studies looking good in that direction, but not yet 100% confirmed.

No Healthcare system is prepared for this.

Also, is it really fair to compare the Italian and American case numbers? There are 5 times as many people in the USA.

This is a very serious situation and we're all just trying to get through it. Information is welcome, but maybe we can cool it will all the doom and gloom bullshit.

It's not helping anybody.

I try to stay away from looking at the total cases. And even at the total cases per 1M habitants. The testing is done so differently from country to country, it's totally impossible to compare.

Right now Belgium has 6000 cases on a population of 11M. But we hardly do any testing, only the severe cases. I'm pretty sure if we would test everyone with mild symptoms, our number of cases would explode, but we'd have a far better idea of where we are. We're only now looking to upgrade from 2000 tests a day to 10.000.

The only ways to possibly compare is hospitalisations / ICU / deaths (per 1M habitants). And even then it's totally unsure. Do people die from Corona or secondary infections? How are they counted? When are they counted? Are they even tested when they die outside of a hospital? ...

I can’t tell if it’s sadder that this is an argument they think is worth making/airing, or just that it’s so stupidly false.

I've seen a few stories about people coughing on things. I really hope they throw the book at these people. They deserve to rot in prison.

Well, the common cold is from the corona virus family, and the immunity we get from having it doesn't last long. And viruses mutate and have different strains. We may be able to loosen some restrictions at some point, but until there is a vaccine, this will be disrupting our lives in a major way. Probably no semblance of normal the rest of 2020 unless a vaccine is created and mass produced in record time.

I suspect we will go through a few series of social distancing periods over the next 12 months to deal with this, but at some point the healthcare system will be adapted enough to handle a general return to work.

If anything, our healthcare system will be in far, far rougher shape four, five, six months from now. Overtaxed equipment breaking down, irreplaceable numbers of providers sick or dying, everybody exhausted and suffering ptsd, medical education programs put on hold because schools can’t send students into these hospitals. Our best case scenario is, in fact, simply that we keep the numbers down to a point where the system doesn’t break.

Having enough ventilators on hand to keep most people from drowning to death in a hospital bed is not going to make us “return to work” ready.

There's not going to be a general return to work for many people. They may want to return to work only to find the business went out of business. Not many small businesses will have the financial resources to make it through to when the lockdowns are done.
