I hate making lists but it's fun. I still need to see a few more movies, but so far my 2013 rankings are:

Loved it. Llewyn Davis' character had everything that was missing in Frances Ha. A sense of urgency, anxiety, & uncertainity/dread regarding the future.

There's been a run of strong of smaller films that have a coming of age feel to them (Mud, Kings of Summer, Way Way Back) but this one is a little more on the dramatic side. I liked it but I don't know if I will watch it again.

Im expecting good things with All Is Lost.

Wild River (1960). Kazan again brilliant at showcasing his actors. The love story between Clift & Remick felt forced. Good scenery though. And I've never seen Clift so wise and grown up before.

The Spirit of St. Louis (1957). Jimmy Stewart is the best.

The Act of Killing. Not sure how I feel about this movie. On one hand, it's important to study how genocide affects culture and the people it touches, including the perpetrators. And it's also important to show that the Indonesian government had to be involved in the killings. On the other hand, I'm not sure this sack of shit who murdered thousands of people deserved the kind of treatment the filmmakers gave him. Am I really suppose to feel sorry for this fucking guy?

I really don't think the movie suggests that you should feel sorry for him. he's utter scum.

it's just interesting him cope with his guilt/ vomit in the last few scenes. but I don't think you should necessarily feel sorry for him because of it.

You may be right. That was just kind of the gut reaction I had to the movie. And in a way, the movie and filmmakers reflect the view that Indonesia has of the killers, which seems to be nonchalant acceptance.

I think the film-makers don't really have to cast the killers in any particular light, on the basis that the killers actions speak for themselves. For that matter, the movie is that much more horrific in it's casual indifference.

Agreed. Several hours later and I can't get the movie out of my head. What a strange and powerful movie.

They're making a sequel. Sharknado II: The Second One.

I saw Jack Ryan: Into Darkness last night. It's a surprisingly reasonable flick...almost retro in the fact that the action is very reasonable and appropriate to the moment, and nobody does anything like drive a car straight off a 10 story cliff and survive or jump onto a hovering jet plane or whatever. It doesn't blow up half a city, or CG over-the-top aerobatic maneuvers that people should be chemically neutered for not laughing at, it takes the time to indulge in little moments that give the main characters some quality of personality, and it doesn't try to be more than it is. It feels sort of like a very adequate 1980's action movie that doesn't have Ahnold or Sylvester in it (speaking of, jesus did Ahnold look tired in the trailer for his new movie).

And since Pine brought more to Star Trek than it deserved, and Costner brought more to Man of Steel than....anybody else, really...it was nice to see them both given a movie that wasn't a CGseizure tornado of yellface.

Also, his new trailer makes me think that Liam Neeson might just be a walking Verizon ad.
