To which I reply the same way:
- Spoiler: show

He's wanting his old life. The ring. The shirts, the ties, the suits...
We all know he's not disciplined enough to live the Gene life forever.
Now we know that Jeffy and his friend will be what messes this up. Jimmy told them to forget Gene, but didn't mention that they should forget Saul Goodman.
Or maybe it'll be Jeffy's mom bugging the shit out of him to have Gene over and for Gene to bring Nippy with him.

- Spoiler: show
- I'm trying to think of what he could have heard on that call that sent him into such a tailspin. It feels like this is going for an awfully depressing (albeit fitting) ending.
One question I have, though; has the entire Gene timeline we've seen in the show all happened shortly after he arrived in Nebraska? I think I assumed he'd been there for some time with his new identity, but his call with his former assistant felt like the events at the end of Breaking Bad hadn't happened that long ago.

The way he starts to spiral immediately after the call, I would imagine so

This was good and is giving me a clearer idea of the trajectory we’re on than last week did. He can’t help himself. I’m feeling better about where we’re headed.
I do wonder if Kim will make an 11th hour appearance to “save” Jimmy from himself.
Why was he so hellbent on finishing the job on the cancer patient? This seems like more than just wanting the rush of pulling off Slippin’ Jimmy jobs. WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT PHONE CALL?????

Slept on it and maybe it wasn't as bad as I thought. Maybe I gave last week's episode too much credit in breaking the Saul out of Gene. One refused call from Kim (or whatever it was) and he can't handle it. Gene is pulling Slippin' Jimmy tricks and living like Saul.

I don’t think it’s as simple as his behavior being a return to Jimmy or Saul. I’m not seeing him get much enjoyment out of these heists. Saul is a part of this but I think something else is going on here. Understanding what happened on that phone call is the key.

Sorry but I hate this. "It's not Gene!" "It's Slippin' Jimmy!" "It's Saul!" Same with the people (you) who became fixated on clear-cut distinctions between personas when it was "Heisenberg" vs "Walter White," and started calling it out like it was some sort of inconsistency. It's a silly way to look at a story this nuanced, these aren't a bunch of distinct personalities living within the same body, it's all the same person. It's more like a messy soup than some sort of identity rolodex.

They are all separate entities with hard boundaries and no crosswalks between them

It's actually kind of bullshit of you to call me out on commenting on the show using the frame that the show clearly sets for itself. Especially since I combined three "identities" in one sentence to describe this moment in Jimmy's life. I obviously don't think of them as distinct personalities. I literally wrote Gene is acting like Jimmy and living like Saul. If that's not a description of a "messy soup" I don't know what is. Using the names is a shorthand
