BvS had been carrying a lot cynical weight before anyone ever saw so much as a teaser for this movie: the Batfleck choice (based off of Daredevil I assume?), the irrelevant mocking of DC "trying to catch up with Marvel", and the purists grudge ever since Supes murdered Zod.

It faced even more plot-centric criticism when the trailers were released; which was more melodramatic bell ringing.

If your typical super hero/comic book/action-fantasy fan went into this movie with an open mind, then I cannot fathom how they came away with most of the negative criticisms I've seen. I think bada is spot on.

Yeah, good points, K. I had kinda forgotten how skeptical people were because of "bloat" from really early on.

The media backlash when she cut her hair caused me to stop watching the show because I was weak willed and easily influenced like BvS haters.

My Dad is one of the purest cinema-goers I know. He doesn't care about "Marvel vs. DC", doesn't follow the pre-release minutiae, doesn't read reviews, doesn't even watch trailers online. But he goes to the movies all the time because he just loves movies. He likes both Batman and Superman and wasn't expecting much out of BvS other than a good action film. He came out bored and exasperated, telling me it was a frustrating movie that was too long, too convoluted, too dour.

I agree that there's been a critical pile-on effect-- as the days went on it seemed that reviewers were trying to out-snark each other with funny ways to put down this film. But I really don't think all of the critical (and, in large part, audience) reaction can be attributed to preconceived notions and cynicism. There are integral issues regarding the film's structure, logic and coherence that are a large part of why it didn't seem to resonate with casual moviegoers. People who are okay with taking it in as a more expressionistic and maximalistic piece won't be bothered by those quirks (or problems, depending on how you look at it).

Cmon. Superman is one of the first things I can remember growing up. Who didn't want this film to be awesome? I wanted to be awesome. I've no interest in having a go at him via something he likes, that's his schtick.
I really didn't like the film. At all. And it's worse cos it should and could have as easily been great. Also don't care if you believe that or not but if you want to follow your logic, I'd propose he's only defending it so much
Cos he's knows it's awful and everyone hates it and is trying to stick one up to Star Wars for whatever reason.

I can certainly see my knowledge of the greater DC universe might fill in some gaps that your casual viewer might see as issues. I know when I watched some of the Harry Potter movies I could feel that parts of the movies were providing cues to the book readers that were lost on me.

that extra familiarity can cut both ways, though. a lot of critics on the comic side had issues because the interpretation of the characters didnt gel with their existing expectations for who the characters were, and were not persuaded by the reinterpretation
