Some more speculation:

I think I have seen this multiple times when the band gets asked about the Ed as a bandleader topic that it is often Stone who answers. And then Stone says something like Ed is the super creative one who could work with anybody but still sticks to Pearl Jam. And while I think that Stone is honest about that I still get the impression that it is a very personal thing for him that probably did hurt him years ago. But in order not to really touch the topic he erases a potential discussion by directly stating that Ed is somehow above them.

Surely it would be easier to just let someone else answer the question if that were the case? I mean, if you have issues with something, keep quiet...

So the Tom Waits/Neil Young "don't learn the song too perfectly" approach produced this band's best results as well. But then, that period is also the one they now seem to be most critical of.

Mark threw the guys a lob ball with that second question, and they responded with a bunt.

This is true. Certainly the editors I speak to are always saying this about poets, and the little editorial I've done would confirm their theory.

I can relate. It hasn't been until recently that my opinion of my best work has lined up with the critical receptions towards it. Little things that happen during the process can create an attachment or heightened sense of value. I have one drawing that i still hold pretty high even though it isn't that spectacular solely for the fact that it came out exactly the way it was in my head without any struggle or back and forth. Yet, there is a large on I did that I felt was over the top and way too blunt that has gotten praise from several respected artists.

I always kinda think deep down he doesnt believe that, but because other people do he.....goes along with it? I dunno.

Isnt there a quote from neil young or about neil young saying he told the rest of the band they had to 'keep up' with ed? That would be kinda rough.

Also I thought jeff saying 'those albums could have been better but ed just told us what to play' while ed nodded along was kinda awkward.

Not necessarily. If somebody else answers the issue could still ruminate in you. Openly stating "that there is no problem" could be a way of coping by preventing yourself from thinking about it too much.

Yeah, something like this. At least to a certain extent. Maybe he is just tired of bringing the topic up and thinks it's the healthiest way for him and the band to kind of accept the hierarchy.

Oh and this is definitely not psychoanalysis (thank god ). Way to concrete . It`s more the result of the interesting questions that are indeed better than most of PJ 20.

Honestly, what else do you think they mean by "unique" in this instance? It's not that he's from the world of sports and they're from the world of music. The media has pushed the "Pearl Jam is friends with sports dudes!" angle ad nauseam since day one (Jack McDowell, Shawn Kemp, Dennis Rodman, Kelly Slater, Pete Sampras, Kerry Wood, Peter Gammons, Theo Epstein, etc.).

I think you're justified in being pissed off, harmless.

It's the same old shtick time and again: rather than just an interviewer, he's a guy afflicted with a disease, who happens to be a "huge fan" who is having his life's treat, meeting PJ. The fact that he's an ex-football player and thus a sports celebrity is a footnote in this case. It's infantilisation. Mike is clumsy with his words, so I don't expect any different from him, but I'm far too used to able-bodied people talking about how great it is to be around disabled people because we are so "inspiring". That's great, Mike, but hopefully he's cool to be around just because he is? I'm talking about portrayal, because the media will always give you a version of reality, not the whole thing. And this is a formulaic one I'm very used to. It's a charitable narrative but ultimately not a particularly respectful one.

You know, I think I can understand your viewpoint. Able-bodied people are often patronising to people that disabled. I've caught myself doing it before, and it feels terrible.

It's an easy habit to fall into, instead of just treating that person the same regardless of their disability. Isn't there a saying, something like 'see the person, not the disability?'. But, there is often this feeling of needing to be extra nice, and give special treatment, to someone with a disability. I think it's mainly because that person got dealt a shitty hand, and I feel bad for them.

A former student of mine was in a wheelchair. We never talked about it, and when he wanted to get in and out of the office I'd hold the door because it was easier for him. That was about it. But there are times I wondered if he wanted it acknowledged. Like the time a friend told me he was gay and i said I didn't care
