If your typical super hero/comic book/action-fantasy fan went into this movie with an open mind, then I cannot fathom how they came away with most of the negative criticisms I've seen. I think bada is spot on.

I agree that there's been a critical pile-on effect-- as the days went on it seemed that reviewers were trying to out-snark each other with funny ways to put down this film. But I really don't think all of the critical (and, in large part, audience) reaction can be attributed to preconceived notions and cynicism. There are integral issues regarding the film's structure, logic and coherence that are a large part of why it didn't seem to resonate with casual moviegoers. People who are okay with taking it in as a more expressionistic and maximalistic piece won't be bothered by those quirks (or problems, depending on how you look at it).

I can certainly see my knowledge of the greater DC universe might fill in some gaps that your casual viewer might see as issues. I know when I watched some of the Harry Potter movies I could feel that parts of the movies were providing cues to the book readers that were lost on me.

True. Lots of people latch onto a specific interpretations or eras of a character and feel that it's the only way the character should be. When you have continuous stories being told weekly/monthly in multiple books for 75 years you can expect that there are lots of different versions of these characters. There are certainly some core characteristics that this film plays with that I can see why it might turn some people off if they are sticklers. I can be a stickler I get it.

I think this comes from people that only think that they know comics, or want people to think they know comics. Because there's a lot of precedent in comic books for almost everything in this movie.

I like that this movie didn't spoon feed me everything. I enjoy walking out of the movie theater with questions of my own.

Not really, I guess? I know he's great. But it does become irritating to constantly see him get belittled, and to get belittled for liking him. Especially when it could potentially jeopardize his future films.

I get the stickler-ism, because I get irritated over poorly adapted crossover art as well, but with properties like these--from which the creative well of various writers and artists to draw from is about as deep as it gets, it's annoying.

I do understand where the Jorge's dad/casual demographic is landing, as it's not nearly as popcorn-y as the Marvel brand, but I also think a casual viewer would benefit from a second viewing much more than someone with any kind of gap knowledge. I think it's easy to miss the beauty and life of it, especially if you let the guessing game take over ("who's this?" "who's that?" "is he dreaming? "is that a flashback?"), which I can imagine might be exhausting to some movie goers when coupled with the darker themes and visuals.

There is light, though. I didn't come out of this movie feeling like this Batman was ultimately any darker than Nolan's version. I also don't think Snyder distanced Superman from the core principles that he has always had to contend with, only maybe in a more profound way.

Nolan's movies felt way darker to me. Much more hopeless and ugly.

Yeah, you know what, I agree with you.

I can't compare them, obviously, but I disagree about Nolan's movies were hopeless and/or ugly.

I always felt insecurely contrarian due to the popularity of those movies, but other than nice character performances, the Nolan Batman world left me entirely underwhelmed. If not for that Joker, and probably Ledger's death, I don't think there would be as much universal acclaim for them.
