Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
The Power of Right is so good. It's 100% going to keep getting better, too. I can feel it. I just listened to it again and it's got real legs!

i can't quite put my finger on it, but eddie's singing on the haves reminds me of how he sings on sirens. and boy, do i hate it.

12. Good and evil
13. The haves
The first 6-7 are very close and can be interchangeable. If On my way were longer it would be top 3. Jericho and Good and evil are ok, just not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate both.

Pleasantly surprised. I liked Long Way enough, it was easy listening, but despise The Haves. BITC got my hopes up a little bit but kept my expectations low. I’m happy with the record.
Mrs. Mills is lovely. Try is a lot of fun. Have to give it more spins but it’s a nice addition. Ed sounds like he’s having fun.

it may be ignorance on my part and totally obvious, but what is Rose of Jericho actually about?

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I haven't had time to really look at the lyrics. But at first blush I assumed it was one of his environmentalism songs a la Infallible. Something exploring climate change and whatnot.Ms Harmless wrote:it may be ignorance on my part and totally obvious, but what is Rose of Jericho actually about?
But again, I'd really need to look at the words and see if I'm hearing any of them correctly.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
I find the first verse kind of awkward when he's just singing about a plant. But then it's:
Stuck at a bus stop, reading H. D. Thoreau
The smell of asphalt makes it hard to swallow
Another heat wave, becoming all that we know
We should've listened to the voice of the rose

Those are the lines that seemed the most pronounced when I listened this morning. I obviously didn't remember them verbatim, having only heard them once, but it was that general idea that stuck with me. Specifically the last two lines there. I'm not sure I totally understood the first two when I listened.

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
ah! see I didn't even know the rose of Jericho was a plant, I thought it was some metaphor about Jericho, or even the title of a person? it's so weird that my brain goes there before "it's just a literal plant"

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
ive only been able to give this one listen thus far and most of the songs havent developed wn independent identity yet. but a few very preliminary observations:
invincible made the strongest first impression (positive )
the haves works better in the context of the album
its kind if fun to see so many of his lesser tapped influences on display

Re: Eddie Vedder - Earthling
Stip and I don't agree on much when it comes to Pearl Jam. I really like this record. So... I'm not as confident that he'll love it. But I hope he does. I think I hear a lot of what he likes about Eddie's songwriting in this record.
