What movies are you watching?

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

I really liked the novel (Human Stain). But I could never bring myself to watch the movie.

Never read it, but I'm sure the core story is great -- I love the concept.

But Anthony Hopkins?
With a British accent?
For a character born in the southern US?

It's a...bit of a stretch.

Yeah, it's terrible casting. That's part of why I never bothered to watch it. Honestly, even without the British accent it's terrible casting.

I kinda feel the same way about Gladiator, actually. I know that's not a popular opinion. But a New Zealander/Australian playing an Hispano-Roman with an American accent? I couldn't handle it.

I still haven't seen Gladiator though I have been watching a YouTube series that GQ has up of actors just riffing on their past roles and Crowe's was pretty entertaining while obviously including that film; added it to the list.

The people behind the HBO-series Rome, had a running joke on their set about Gladiator, calling it Hollyrome. Basically they meant it was just a soap opera, with no basis in fact.

However, it’s still a cool movie.
