Yeah, good point - I certainly enjoy the drafting part the most. But I don't mind a bit of whinging either.

Varis (Didn't know a lot of songs in both teams while liking the ones I knew about the same. Listening to the songs new to me I decided to go with Varis. That Billy Brag song was really good)
bart (Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Hyper Ballad, Seven, Across The Sea, Lazy Line Painter Jane You're the only one with Belle & Sebastian on your team, that's another plus)
I Got Bugs (Didn't know any of Lament's songs apart form New Noise which I like. Listening to them now and most of them don't do it for me. The Tricky/PJ song was cool, though. Le Tigre only annoyed me.)
LetMeSleep (Svefn-G-Engler, Roads, Via Chicago, Ship Song This is one of my favorite teams)
Farmer John (FJ has some songs I really love with Come On Up To The House and Exit Music and an overall solid team while I dislike some of Sarge Picks like Collective Soul and Faith No More)

Dsb - Neither of these teams is a huge favourite, but both have some good tracks. Dsb has a mixture of songs I really like with songs I really don't, Varis is more middle of the road. It was a close run thing. It probably swung on Billy Bragg's accent reminding me of several miserable Brummies that I know.

Rangi - On first glance, I was going the other way, but listening to both teams swung me towards Rangi - Teardrop is awesome, I'm a Sublime fan (though would've gone with April 29, 1992), had never heard that Ben Harper song, but it's really good, went through huge Placebo and Silverchair phases, and SOAD is the tits (though I mostly hopped onto the bandwagon with their later stuff).

Bugs - Not a fan of 90's electronic music. It's too nascent to be compelling - the ubiquity of computers in the 00's has led to some really good usage of blips and beeps, but Lament's team doesn't work for me (though I enjoyed Negative, Stutter and Deceptacon). Bugs gets points for Skinned, Tom Petty and Scentless Apprentice.

LMS - I really like this team, despite the lack of a stone cold, definitive 90's hit. That Skee-Lo song was my happiest moment in this tournament, though.

Farmer John - If Sarge had been up against a few other teams, I would've voted for him, but FJ has some great picks. Exit Music was my first Radiohead choice, Do the Evolution is brutal and Can I Kick It? Genius.

The irony here is that Billy Bragg is one of my favorites on Varis' team and I've been kicking myself for overlooking the Bragg / Wilco collaboration on "California Stars". Turns out it was 1998, not 2000 like I thought.

Given my work and life commitments I'm not going to be able to give these as careful a listen as round I. I'll make it up to the winners in round II.

Dsb: Varis had a consistently pretty good team, but it needed one or two more standout tracks to really help anchor it. Dbs had nightswimming and not for you, which means he basically needed to not blow it. And everything else on here is mostly pretty good. the bulk of Varis' team may be slightly better, but not enough to make up for the lack of standouts. It was close, though, Respectable showings from both teams.

Bart: Rangi did have 46+2 (my favorite song on either team), but Rangi's team kinda fell off a cliff with 7+8, and both teams were close enough that there just wasn't enough top shelf (to my tastes) songs on Rangi's team to make up for it.

Bugs: I don't know most of the stuff on Lament's team very well, and if I had more time to listen some of it might have opened up. Bugs isn't a favorite, but there's some nice diversity (not that lament didn't have this), an amazing AIC song (though scentless apprentice is one of maybe 3 nirvana songs I flat out dislike) and enough comfortable familiarity to pull him through. This is the vote I am least confident in.





LetMeSleep--I like the instincts in Bigred's team, and that he drafted some of the more absurd moments of the 90s, but there were a few too many cases where he got the right band but the wrong song.


Farmer John. I like a lot of what sarge did here, and he would have been my vote in most of the other matches this round. That Manic Street Preachers song is actually pretty good. Gel is a guilty pleasure, Last Goodbye is overrated (as is Jeff Buckley) but it's still a nice song. I like days of the new and was glad to see them get some love. There was better radiohead stuff still available (no one took airbag, my favorite Radiohead song) but high and dry is still good. And the jesus jones song is ridiculous, but in a good way. But this team needed a few strong songs to anchor it. And nothing on here can compete with Do the Evolution or Come on Up to the House (which would have been my TW pick if it were available). Seasons is another favorite. I hate the RHCP, and I think if we were to pick a song at random I'm more likely to enjoy what came on Sarge's team. But other than the Chili Peppers, Farmer john doesn't really have any mistakes, and he has enough standout tracks to get the nod.
