I was in KC for a soccer tournament this past weekend. Was getting some stuff out of the car and I hear what I think is a live version of a Soundgarden song. It was loud, distant, and echoed through the soccer park. So I'm thinking, "What the hell, that's odd, someone playing such a Soundgarden song". But it only lasted for a brief moment. Then I thought, "Wait a minute, I'm going to check their tour schedule". Sure enough, they're playing the Starlight Theatre just a short distance away, and what I heard was obviously a soundcheck. I was like "Wow what a coincidence, one of my all-time fav bands playing less than a mile away".

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go Sunday night and haven't been following their spring tour with the exception of knowing they were playing Rocklahoma this year. I'm a huge fan, but money and family obligations keep me from attending concerts anymore.

I'm fucking destroyed over this. My wife heard it on the radio this morning and called me. I thought it was a joke at first, but she isn't as big a fan of the music as I am.

I'm like a lot of you guys. I can't process this information. I don't get too excited over celebrities, or indulge much in our society's practice of constant hero worship, but dammit, Chris Cornell meant something to me. His music, his struggles, his perspective on the world, and the apparent triumph he enjoyed with his new life. I haven't cried since my dad died 4 years ago, but I couldn't help it today. I lost something personal to me, an influence and a part of my life. As remote as we are to some of these people, a special connection is made through their music. Chris was so likable. Handsome and intelligent, a gifted singer and songwriter. I feel terrible for his family, friends, Matt / Ben / Kim. Not only is Chris dead, Soundgarden is DEAD.

I have a really hard time believing he committed suicide. The man appeared to be happy for years now, has young kids and a beautiful wife. He seemed so grounded and content. Autoerotic asphyx or suicide.....I don't like the options.

Now, we don't get the Soundgarden album they were working on, any TOTD stuff, or any solo material......

I can't fathom this. This is a bullshit reality we're living in. I don't want this to be true, BUT IT IS. Come on, Chris. FUCK.

Chris has been sober for many years. I haven't seen him look drunk or high at a concert in a very long time, but some of you would know better than me. There's a lot of footage on YT of their show from last night. Maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there, but he seems a little off (tired?):

(throws a pic or something and kinda stumbles @ :12)

Also, @ 6:35

I could see them opening up the vaults or never releasing anything agin. I guess it depends on how they process this...probably up to Kim.

Honestly I think that's just Cornell, he always seemed a bit spaced out in his performances even when sober.

Man...this is a bummer.

This is actually a misconception.

https://afsp.org/about-suicide/suicide-statistics/

"In 2015, the highest suicide rate (19.6) was among adults between 45 and 64 years of age. The second highest rate (19.4) occurred in those 85 years or older. Younger groups have had consistently lower suicide rates than middle-aged and older adults. In 2015, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 had a suicide rate of 12.5."

He has teased it before during S & B. I wouldn't read into it. I did listen to last week's ATL show and thought he seemed off, just pulling off early and stuff.

I'm crushed by the news today. PJ got me started on music but over the years Chris had joined EV as the one I would travel anywhere/anytime to see. Regretting that we couldn't make the KC show last weekend, but the last of the 30 or so CC shows we saw was Temple in Seattle, which means even more now.

We were upfront/front row for many shows and he never looked anything but ecstatic to be on stage.

Such a tragic loss. The thought of never seeing him on stage again is overwhelming.

Luckily I saw Soundgarden twice and Audioslave once and Cornell solo twice. His solo shows were such a perfect fit for him over the last 5 years or so - voice often sounded fantastic and warm. And always interesting choices for covers.

The time I saw Soundgarden at the UIC Pavilion in 2011 was absolutely epic. I was shocked how good they sounded. One of the heaviest shows I've ever been to.

So sad it'll never happen again. And I'm sad for Matt Cameron b/c that dude was always meant to play those songs with that band.
