To talk about the new record, I called Stone at home (where he lives with his wife, his six year old daughter and a new baby arriving soon), not far from Seattle […] The first question I wanted to ask him was essentially one: “Why it took you so long to come back with a new album?” but his answer originates from further - “On this record I worked more than I did in the past! All those vibrato guitar notes you hear on the right side of your stereo are all mine. I wrote many melodies and played riffs that usually Mike would play. […] I’m proud of Mike’s contribution on the album, however, I signed Let the records play, and co-wrote Infallible and Pendulum with Jeff.”

Maybe it took all that time because of their creative process. Gossard explains: “Every one of us records a number of demos on their own, then we gather in the studio, at first without Eddie, and jam on these demos. The result is a cd with 14 or 15 songs, we give it to Eddie and only then we practise and repeat the whole process three or four more times. In the end, we play them for Brendan [O’Brien]. Our songs take shape like this, like a dialogue, and without even realizing it we’re in Los Angeles to record the definitive version. This time it only took more time (two years and a half) to write new material, but in all it took only six weeks tor record, mix included.” […]

“At times lyrics come first, and I prefer this method because words push arrangements in completely new directions and you write something you normally wouldn’t write. But mostly it’s music, melody, that comes first and shapes words. Could it be a simple guitar riff (usually only two notes) or a longer sequence. In that case there’s a choice to be made, we keep the best three sequences and use the rest for another song.”

Abilty of choosing what to keep and what to discard is often what defines the genius during the creative effort – “Absolutely” says Gossard – “reducing and narrowing down primary elements it’s the better way to reach the essential” […] “I like Hank William’s chord changes for example, his extremely simple approach. His arrangements, I don’t know, it’s like they awake my inner Ramones and AC/DC… because those are songs made of nothing, yet incredibly original: what’s that makes them special? The way the voice relates with the music? Or the rhythm with chords? It must be something very simple and unique, for sure” - It’s the same unexplainable beauty of classics like Louie Louie and Wild thing… “Exactly!”, replies Gossard. “After all, you know how it’s said, there are only 12 chords”.

What else will they do in the future? A reggae record? Polka? A rock opera like The Who’s Tommy? Or -probably- they know well their task is give fans what they expect from their band? Gossard says ‘no’, and in this answer there’s the whole PJ essence: “When we make a record, we’re doing it mainly for ourselves, we are our music’s first fans: we want it to move something inside us. Generally it works like this: if we like what we’re playing, that sensation automatically is transmitted to our fans. It’s the only rule we imposed ourselves and followed for all these years”

Talking about solo projects, that O’Brien too believes slowed down PJ’s recent production as a band, Stone confirms: “Everyone’s got his style. Ukulele Songs is a very personal album, and Eddie gave much importance to it. An ukulele isn’t exactly a Pearl Jam instrument, it’s the most quiet and delicate one that exists. Yet, on the new album we put a cover of Sleeping by Myself from Ukulele Songs. We wanted to do a Harry Nilsson-thing, we like to explore ballads, writing acoustic songs that suddenly explode in the most noisy and powerful riff you ever heard. We grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, the incredible variety of styles of the Beatles and The Who: we know well that a rock band can embrace different musical horizons. For us, any little variation on our path is not a distraction, but a way to keep going and become a better band”

Pearl Jam will be touring in the US in October, then in 2014 in Australia and New Zealand. Nobody but them knows better how to handle a tour. They spend about 10 months a year playing around the world, but Gossard says that whenever he’s at home he always spends his time with his daughter – “We miss our families very much. To be far away for three weeks from a six years old child seems to be an infinite time, but whenever I can I bring her with me”. Sometimes he comes back home only for a couple of days: “Of course, ours is a particular case. We can choose, and we choose to do only three weeks long tours at time. We try not to exaggerate: it’s only R&R, and we’re not saving the universe. It’s more important to take care of ourselves. That’s probably why our band is still together after all these years, we’re still having fun” – Will you keep playing like Rolling Stones and other white-haired rockers? “ I don’t see a reason why we shouldn’t play concerts at 60, maybe at some point we’ll say ‘Ok, it’s been fun, but now it’s time to stop’, but for now we don’t want to stop” .

Agreed. But, I'm pretty sure the whole thing is fake. If you notice how the candles are placed...it appears as though the cake is expecting a face.
