So many people here trying to treat music like sports i.e. "My band could mop the floor with your band!"

If my basketball team beats yours, there was a statistical winner and loser. With music, we are all winners when we listen to what pleases us for whatever reasons. I suppose the corollary is that some of us are losers for listening to music that doesn't please us.

This list was prob written by three twenty-something staffers who weren't even a twinge in the sack when these bands were in their pump.

Kinda hoping I'm mis-remembering this, but, I feel like I listened to Lanegan on a podcast shortly before he passed, and, he said the brothers were just the most miserable human beings and that they were lucky that he was ever even in a band with him.

I recall being really disappointed hearing that. Not sure if they spoke prior to his passing, but, I hope they were able to exchange some cordial words towards the end. I'd like to think that he at least had some warm feelings towards what they created together

Not to be overly-pedantic, but...to be overly-pedantic, I suppose if you're viewing "Grunge" through the lens of bands like Green River, Melvins, Tad, Soundgarden, the Deep Six comp., etc...in '85-'86, then, yeah, they kinda did.

Not saying I agree with that assessment, but, I could see the argument.

I missed some stuff…

1. I couldn’t care less about drum triggers. They are a tool. Matt knows how to drum.

2. Thanks for the IDLES call out. They are new to me and pretty decent. Don’t see much of a connection or relevance to Pearl Jam but I’m glad I have heard them.

3. Foo Fighters have more or less stuck to their script over the years and are radio friendly while being “cool”. While Pearl jam let the Creeds and Stainds of the world take their space and dilute what their mainstream sound was.

4. That top 20 list is certainly a list. Not sure their is any value to take away from it

5. Still like Dark Matter. Wish it wasn’t so in your face production wise but it doesn’t take away from the song for me.

Like, I've tried with IDLES and it's just not there for me. Maybe I'm just not that much of a post-punk fan. I love melody, and I feel like so much of IDLES is hard edges without much regard for the delicate substructure, but again, that's just me. I love that they do it for a lot of people here and can certainly grok that their energy matches that Whipping and Spin the Black Circle type of Pearl Jam.

Duff, Kurt, Layne... he spoke well of a lot of musicians.

Prato's book, which is comprised solely of interviews from others in the industry structured around topics, has Gary Lee included quite a bit.

The conversation has moved away from where it was this morning (understandable -- rankings were involved), so I'll resist the urge to chime in on the IDLES/PJ/Foo Fighters/cultural relevancy discussion that left at least one poster itchy in a sacred place, but -- lots of great posts that I really enjoyed reading, so thanks. There's a lot of potentially interesting stuff there that could be enjoyable to continue exploring in a separate thread, if others were likewise inclined. Doesn't seem like there's much fondness for such digression here...

Played Dark Matter to my wife and her boyfriend today. They both really enjoyed it.
