Didn't seem to be any concern about "lowering the temperature" or "uniting the country" from the right yelling far and wide about voter fraud and a stolen election without a shred of proof these past few months. Isn't that the real issue that actually ignited the revolution on the 6th?

Trump’s business prospects just got dimmer as Wall Street backs away from tarnished brand

More than two decades ago, Donald Trump the New York developer found refuge at Deutsche Bank after a syndicate of lenders, including predecessor firms to JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup, cut ties with him.

Now, after followers of President Trump laid siege to the U.S. Capitol in a riot that caused at least five deaths last week, even Deutsche Bank wants nothing to do with him.

The moves by Wall Street institutions to distance themselves from Trump make his transition to a post-presidency life much harder. Deutsche Bank has been Trump’s primary business lender since the 1990s and is owed about $340 million in three loans, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

When those loans come due in 2023 and 2024, Trump will have to repay them in full or find another institution to lend him the money. He cannot refinance with Deutsche, which had been looking at cutting ties with Trump even before the horrific events of Jan. 6, said the person, who declined to be identified speaking about private matters.

“The Trump brand has been severely tarnished; he’s toxic from a public relations standpoint,” said Mark Williams, a Boston University finance lecturer and former Federal Reserve examiner. “His lifeblood has been his ability to borrow money for leveraged transactions. As soon as that dries up, it will put a lot more financial stress on him.”

When his relationship with Deutsche began, Trump was merely a well-known real estate developer. The bank hadn’t anticipated his pivot to politics, and when Trump asked Deutsche for a loan of at least tens of millions of dollars during the 2016 Republican primaries, the bank refused, according to the person.

Internally, the bank’s risk committee had been weighing how to disentangle itself from Trump, Reuters reported in early November. The bank considered offloading his loans to other parties, but that would likely require signoff from Trump himself. The events at the Capitol were the final straw for Deutsche, the person said.

Still, the bank has never lost money on Trump, at least not yet, according to the person. If Trump defaults on his loans, Deutsche can seize the golf courses and hotels secured by the mortgages, and if their value isn’t sufficient to repay the debt, the bank can go after Trump personally, who guaranteed the loans, the person said.

Other institutions also stepped away from Trump after the Capitol siege: Signature Bank, a New York-area institution, has called for Trump to resign and said it was closing two personal accounts where Trump kept about $5.3 million. A spokeswoman says the bank won’t do business “with any members of Congress who voted to disregard the Electoral College.” The New York Times first reported news of the two lenders stepping away from the president.

Trump also had deposit accounts at JPMorgan and Capital One, according to 2019 disclosures. Both banks declined to comment.

For Trump, finding a new place to deposit his cash will be relatively simple; it will be harder to find a bank willing to lend him massive amounts of cash. Almost 30 years ago, bankruptcies at several Trump properties left banks with losses, and Deutsche was one of the only large institutions willing to work with him. A Trump organization representative didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Of course, Trump the ex-president will have myriad ways to make money from the tens of millions of Americans who voted for him. While finding liquidity will be harder, there will be institutions willing to lend to him, for perhaps higher interest rates than Trump is accustomed to, according to Williams.

If not, there’s another playbook that Trump can lean on.   

“Presumably he’ll do what he’s done at least five times in his career, which is strategic bankruptcy,” said William Black, associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Really curious to see what Mitch McConnell's play is here. It's very interesting to see him come out for impeachment. Someone in this forum earlier said he probably just wants to control the process. That's probably true, but what's his goal? I'm sure it's not a noble one. Does he smell blood and want to end Trump?

Could be hoping that impeachment slows down the rest of Biden's agenda.

That was me. And I do think he wants to influence the process to both minimize broader Republican exposure and also bog down the opening days of the Biden administration. That’s just typical Capitol Hill chess.

But Mitch is always very careful with his words, and has extraordinary control over his surrogates...the people who plant “a source close to Mitch says” stories. And they are all saying the same thing: he’s mad that this mess might interfere with his likelihood of regaining Senate control in 2022. He has kept with Trump for four years because Trump made things possible for him. That’s just who he is. Now that Trump might hurt his agenda, he’s done.

Republican members of Congress are also receiving death threats related to impeachment, and I think he’s trying to navigate the waters of ditching Trump without it causing any harm to his side of the aisle, specifically.

On January 9th, McConnell sent out a notice to Senate Republicans on convening ahead of schedule for impeachment and asking them to consider their vote on the matter over the weekend. It was reported to be on their caucus conference call agenda for yesterday. Also yesterday, Schumer gave a press conference pressuring Mitch to agree to invoke the 2004 resolution. Whatever was said on the matter last week was posturing for advantage.

"We need unanimous consent to convene early, we won't have that." Doesn't seem like posturing. But I take your point.

It sounds exactly like posturing for advantage. It sends a message to every Republican who might be wavering on expedited impeachment that it’s not worth crossing the line with your vote. Don’t stick your neck out for nothing. It’s the kind of language Mitch uses to guide Senate Republicans all the time.
