American Hustle.

Well, its a pretty funny movie, and David Russell sure know how to get a great performance from his cast.

Its not better than Wolf of wall street though.

I thought American Hustle was better than The Wolf of Wall Street, but I liked them both a lot. Kinda cool that we had two big farcical ensemble period pieces about con-men come out around the same time, and they were both a lot of fun.

Didn't like American Hustle at all. The excess of Wolf was far better than the meandering banality of Hustle.

What do you think was better in AH?

In short, the cast, the story, the script and the tone.

I think the ridiculousness of American Hustle comes together beautifully, with its chintzy 70s decor and outward cartoonishness. It's consistent with the theme, which is more fleshed-out than Wolf of Wall Street's: it's a movie about appearances, both in a public and private sense, and ambition. While Wolf of Wall Street showed us real big-time white-collar criminals enjoying the spoils of their dishonesty, American Hustle is about small-time crooks proudly showing off their plasticky ersatz, their fancy secondhand clothes, their meticulously styled hair. It gets to the point where they believe their own con, and when they're called out on their bluff they retreat back into what they know best, which is petty sleight-of-hand. I enjoyed that aspect of it a lot.

Also, tonally, I think it's got more going for it. It's got a unified look, a certain visual stylishness that is lacking in Wolf, and it goes along great with the soundtrack. There's nothing in AH that's as laugh-out-loud hilarious as Dicaprio and Hill crawling on the floor while hopped up on quaaludes, but there are moments of an almost sublime absurdity (like that beautiful scene right before the big party, where each player makes their dramatic slow-motion entrance amidst the smoke from an exploding headlight) that sold me completely. Like I said, I enjoyed both films a lot, but I find American Hustle to be a lot more interesting overall.

I agree.

I don't know that I would say Hustle has more personality than Wolf, but it does play to that personality a little bit more, and the results are great.

Anyways, both are fantastic movies.

Hustle felt like a pale imitation of better movies, most of them by Scorsese. I haven't seen Wolf yet, though.

i felt that way too. I really liked it, but it felt like David O. Russell trying to do a Scorsese movie. It was fine, but Wolf is a masterpiece for me.
