The link to the actual NY Times piece was in the article I posted, and I read that too. The issue with the "picture they painted" was that it was just that, a picture or perspective (as is the perspective of the article I posted). The NYT see it from one point of view and admittedly aren't swayed by the facts. Any way you want to slice it, Trumps speech was truthful. And by the way, both public and pundit response to the speech was overwhelming positive (something like a 68% favorability rating). Also, I'm not entirely a Trump supporter. I lean very libertarian, but I'm willing to give the man a chance. After all, he won the election. I do think the wailing and gnashing of teeth, and the protesting/rioting from the left is ridiculous.

“The short answer is we haven’t seen anything like this in the past,” Potok said, referring to the overall surge in reported hate crimes across the country. “This is my 18th year here and I haven’t seen anything remotely like this.”

To have three mosque fires ruled arson within six weeks is highly unusual, said Corey Saylor, director of the Department to Monitor and Combat Islamophobia at the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “In normal times, I will see one to two mosque incidents of any type per month, and rarely is it arson,” he said. “I can tell you for sure I have not seen levels of violence like this since I started tracking this stuff” in 2009.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is not the only member of President Trump’s campaign who spoke to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at a diplomacy conference connected to the Republican National Convention in July. At least two more members of the Trump campaign’s national security officials also spoke with Kislyak at the event, and several more Trump national security advisers were in attendance.

It's unknown what the Trump campaign officials who spoke with the ambassador – J.D. Gordon and Carter Page – discussed with him. Those who took part in the events in Cleveland said it is not unusual for presidential campaign teams to interact with diplomats.
However, the newly-revealed communications further contradict months of repeated denials by Trump officials that his campaign had contact with officials representing the Russian government.
