Yeah I can't quite put my finger on what held it back from being great, but it was really good. Mendelsohn was fantastic.
reynolds, too.

that's what California Split would look like if you replaced one of the best (altman) with merely good contemporary filmmakers

Yeah I thought Reynolds was surprisingly good even though his more intimate scenes were not very well-written. Need to see California Split, that's on the list.

I also enjoyed his movie Eggs.
What are your all time favorite Norwegian movies Anders?
Here are five movies I can easily recommend:

The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975)
Pathfinder (1987)
Elling (2001)
Max Manus (2008)
Trollhunter (2010)

The classics:
Spoiler: show
Nine Lives (1957) was made on location with the real soldiers from ww2, not actors. The story got a more Hollywood feel for The 12th Man (2017). Not a remake, but based on the same true story.

The Chasers (1959) is unique in that it was met with a lukewarm reception from both the press and the Norwegian audience when it was released. And to this day, mostly because of its age, very few people know of it. I can't remember seeing it on Norwegian TV. I found it because I love movies. Yet, by movie lovers it was voted the best Norwegian cinema movie of all time, and it did well at the Cannes film festival. It has a unique way of telling the story, which revolves around a murder.

Many think The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975) is the best Norwegian movie. It's a stop-motion-animated feature length movie ending with a car race.

Based on a Sami legend, Pathfinder (1987), tells the story of a young Sami named Aigin, that comes home from hunting to find his family massacred. The language is also Sami.
Some recommendations:
Spoiler: show
I have made a list of 25 movies below, with some varied content.

Chronologically:

Ni Liv / Nine Lives (1957)
Jakten / The Chasers (1959)
Flåklypa Grand Prix / The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975)
Veiviseren / Ofelaš / Pathfinder (1987)
Kjærlighetens Kjøtere / Zero Kelvin (1995)
Søndagsengler / The Other Side of Sunday (1996)
Insomnia (1997)
Elling (2001)
Uno (2004)
Reprise (2006)
Max Manus / Max Manus: Man of War (2008)
Mannen Som Elsket Yngve / The Man Who Loved Yngve (2008)
deUsynlige / Troubled Water (2008)
Trolljegeren / Trollhunter (2010)
Hodejegerne / Headhunters (2011)
Oslo 31. August / Oslo, August 31st (2011)
Kompani Orheim / The Orheim Company (2012)
Kraftidioten / In Order of Disappearance (2014)
Børning (2014)
Bølgen / The Wave (2015)
Kongens Nei / The King's Choice (2016)
Hva Vil Folk Si / What Will People Say (2017)
Den 12. Mann / The 12th Man (2017)
Utøya 22. juli / Utøya: July 22 (2018)
Blindsone / Blind Spot (2018)
Håp / Hope (2019)
Bent Hamer:
Spoiler: show
He was mentioned by Trag earlier in this thread. He is a movie director with a distinct style. Not sure I would replace any of the movies above with his, but if you enjoy his off-beat stories, it does not necessarily translate into liking the wide range of other types of movies above.

Here's his movies. I enjoyed Eggs and Kitchen Stories the most.

1995 Eggs
1998 En dag til i solen / Water Easy Reach
2003 Salmer fra kjøkkenet / Kitchen Stories
2005 Factotum
2007 O' Horten
2010 Hjem til jul / Home for Christmas
2013 1001 gram / 1001 Grams
Thanks, I'll definitely check some of these! I didn't remember Insomnia was originally a Norwegian movie. I know it's not really on the topic, but I'd love to also hear some Norwegian music (sang in norwegian not in english). Maybe you could put some of your favorites to Other Bands?
I have a lot more opinions on Norwegian movies, than music. Not sure I would know where to start, as opinions and genres vary so much on that large subject.

Watched that Harley Quinn movie yesterday - what a load of trash. I'd run out of things to watch and somehow that flashed up on my radar - If only I'd remembered that I need to give Bone Tomahawk a watch...

I can't believe I wasted my last sick day watching Harley Quinn. I shall see myself to the corner of shame

Still could be worse. I could have decided to watch The Rise of Skywalker again.....

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
