His playing is very rarely more than superfluous (and is often blatantly ill-fitting.)
I'm convinced that at least some members of the band would love to, but can't bring themselves to be the jerks that fire the guy from what's almost certainly the best job he's ever had (either that or he's Ed's weed hook-up.)
He didn't appear on Backspacer and they don't even use him in places they once did, ie: during the intro of Love Boat Captain. I think they're hoping he just eventually gets the hint.

Well I shouted about the negativity here so it's only fair I do do what humans do and say something hypocritical. I've been ready to say goodbye to BOOOOOOOOOM since he arrived. If the band ever needs someone to break it to him I'd be the first to volunteer. He's no Richard Wright or even Roger O'Donnel.
His playing is superfluous as you say and it detracts from the superfluous sounds I want to hear. Like any one of the 4 stringed instruments that are usually being played at once.
