Yeah. It's a song about depression and self-loathing. Saying he's just sad about girls is a very reductive and superficial reading

Hopefully IMT gets the boot and we can forget all about this embarrassing moment in RM history.

I'm not sheltered. I've loved and lost. I've had my heart broken. I've been beaten up and mugged. I pissed on a bank. I once turned down a free handjob from an old man on a bus to Montreal. I have lived
Why did you turn down a free handjob?

Yeah, he’s a sad dude singing about self-loathing. Part of that manifests as him being sad because he’s too ugly to be loved. Riveting stuff.

LV is right here.

Listening to Neil play wailing guitar is always great but the sad sack lyrics are horrendous.

It's a great song, though
I don't think I've ever been certain what that line actually is.
I've listened to eight thousand live versions and, short of Eddie Vedder himself correcting me, I'm certain it's:

And I stare you back
What a blue-eyed scene

So there you go.

I'll make fun of Pearl Jam all day long for their most overwrought woe-is-me self-aggrandizement, but "I Got Shit" strikes me as decidedly not that: it is an earnest, vulnerable and sincere expressions of anger turned inward, one of the most plain and succinct that Ed's ever written. Even the couple of lines in there that are kind of eye-rolly (like the one about being ugly) are offset by the music itself. As a piece about depression and disappointment, it rings true in a very raw and unadorned way. Not sure why you guys are hung up on the "sad dude" thing.
