for all its flaws, I loved this movie as much as I wanted to; I don't think any sci-fi universe ever understood me like The Matrix

maybe I'll get to give Lana a hug someday

That moment with the kids stands out like a sore thumb. Even Wachowski knew it, with that throwaway line about 'using kids' at the end of the movie.

It's indicative of the problems with the movie and its creators!

Burt's right that the rules of the Matrix are completely incoherent in this movie, but I'm not sure why he's fixating on the kids.

Actually I respect the fact that all these movies treat the common sheeple not with contempt, but as a potential enemies at best or utterly valueless at worst.

It's not really about freeing humanity, because fuck those guys. It's about freeing myself! Whatever it takes. There is a good egoistic lesson to be learned here.

Burt's gonna really be interesting once he's in his 30s.

And it's not about the rules of the Matrix. I don't know why this isn't clear. It's about storytelling. I'm not talking about a plot hole.

I would describe inconsistencies in how a character responds to finding out everything is a simulation as part of the rules of the Matrix more broadly. Why do they go back to the analyst to say "this is for the kids" if the kids weren't real. Who knows! No rules.

Yes, that’s why they went back to the analyst.

They don't go back to the analyst for any reason at all, other than to deliver pithy lines to the audience.

The climax was so weird. I didn't even know it was the climax. I was just like "oh Trinity can fly now, too. Neat--wait that's it?!"

All of your criticisms are valid, but I still enjoyed it. It was definitely better than Matrix 2 and 3.

I wondered the same thing as Burt. Just weird that this story goes that way, with Tiffany realizing she’s Trinity and then just immediately ditching the family she was with all that time. Her character in general was handled terribly in this movie, which I think is its biggest flaw. But I enjoyed it, still. The action sequences weren’t as good and some of the new characters needed more time, but for a sequel 18 years later it was good.

lets talk more about the kids

the boy seemed like an asshole. Im sure he was a bully. The girl looked like she could play bass in some weird indie folk band.

I just can't stop thinking about that poor child all alone in the hospital with a broken arm or whatever. And now he has no mother, and his father is probably seriously injured or dead.
