I don't hate it. What I don't like is Ed's voice. Maybe too much compression on the vocal track - just no definition.
I've been wanting to know what sort of 80s reference to make about the early part of this song without just dumbly saying "80s vibe". I don't know if this is it, but it might be. I'm into that quality of it, even if I'm going to need someone else to articulate it better.Donald wrote:I'm getting a kind of Split Enz vibe off this

I really, really don't hear this -- it feels like people are mistaking an erratic, all-over-the-place vocal performance for some kind of imagined, untampered-with genuineness. This absolutely does not have a lightning-in-a-bottle, "band was cutting loose in the studio and the producer managed to click record at just the right time" feel to me; the approach and ultimate sonic character may be different but finally it seems just as dolled up and studiofied as anything on Lightning Bolt.evenslow wrote:this shit is more unhinged than you guys are giving it credit for. the buildup to mike's insane solo into the bridge into the outro is balls to the wall to notch.
I don't think I agree with this either; I think this kind of disjointed, this-part-doesn't-feel-like-it-goes-with-that-part frankensteining has been a weakness of their records for a long time now. I don't know that that registers as "compositional oddity" to me. It's not like "Evacuation" or "Cropduster" where there are musical conventions being bucked in a meticulous, deliberate way; it just feels like careless songwriting.digster wrote:To its credit, I'd agree with this; the oddities of this song's construction would never have showed up (with one or two exceptions) on their last few records.

I'm with ya...this song is pretty damn good...and light years better than the paint-by-numbers rock/punk throwaway songs from the last couple albumsPHATJ wrote:This time gets a high fivePHATJ wrote:Fourth time confirmed. That’s an incredibly fun and renewed spirit I haven’t felt about PJ in about 15 years. This is fun again.PHATJ wrote:After my second listen....PHATJ wrote:I’ve listened once. I’m a bit befuddled, but the last minute or two had me fucking grooving. This is a confusing song, and my gut says that’s actually a very good sign for Gigaton. I don’t want to hear PJ do something they’ve done before. We’ve had that forever. This sounds different. It’s kinda dirty. I love some of the guitar tones in the riff. I’m really uncertain how I will feel about this song in another month or two. Hell, I’m interested to know what it will sound like on second listen. Here goes...
Guys, this song is fucking awesome. I’m totally into it.
Have fun hating
