Favorite PJ album for many reasons, this was around the time i first started discovering how good this band really was, it the first PJ album i bought on the day it was realeased and it also contains two of my favorite all time songs of all time No Way and All those yesterdays...

My issue with Yield initially was that I thought it was too straight forward. I listened once, thought I heard it all and moved on fairly quickly. As the years have gone by I've gotten better speakers and better headphones and I've really taken my time with each song.

There's a lot of great stuff happening. These songs are deceptive. They're full of tricks and the songs keep revealing themselves to me in new ways.

It's taken way too long, perhaps, but it's been worth it. I like Mad Men because its' a slow burn.

I have no idea how anyone could ever put Backspacer ahead of Yield, and I like Backspacer.

Yield has a few titanic songs that beat out anything on Backspacer (GFT, Brain of J, Wishlist, DTE), but after that there are a number of what seem to me to be incomplete anthems (both In Hiding and Faithful, despite the generally fuzzy and full sound on yield, feel thin), or a number of really interesting musical compositions (no way, pilate, low light) that get killed by lyrics I really don't like or vocal choices I am not a fan of.

Yield is a good album. It is in the middle of the pack for me, with S/T and Backspacer, but it is really a hit or miss album for me.

That's interesting to me because my experience is the exact opposite. I guess if you heard a lot of the layers and nuance in the songs initially, maybe it's easy to outgrow them or to grow tired of them. I don't know.

Because they just seemed like simply easy going summer fun songs without much depth for so long, it's kinda blowing my mind to discover how much altitude they really have.

Even something like Given to Fly, which I've long said is a good song that gets overblown by the majority of the Pearl Jam community, is speaking to me in a way it never has before.

Yield is exceptional. Over the last year I've been hearing it with brand new ears and I'm not sure why. Listening to both albums back to back it became painfully clear that one is a fun album made up of good songs. The other is a band near the height of its powers.

As time's gone on, I kind have come to feel that Yield is Backspacer done right. They both strike me as being the most jubiliant listens in their catalog, but the former feels effortless in it's optimism.

There is just a much greater emotional depth to the songs on yield than backspacer. i can see how the two records can be thought of as similar. They both came out after a period of somewhat retreat/darkness from PJ. The music is a lot less heavy handed and refreshing. But the lyrically quality and interesting arrangements make Yield a far superior album.

Come on! Backspacer over Yeild?!

I like Backspacer, but it's a middle of the pack album in my opinions. It could fall between spots 7-4 for me (I'm waaay to wishy washy to rank things with any feeling of authority). Yeild is for sure in the top 4. I think it's aged well; Pilate and Red Dot are the only two tracks I'd really consider to be weak/bad. It also has a lot of high school memories attached to it for me.

I love the feel of the album, it's different from what came before. I love the sing song type of feel in the verses of Faithful (man I love that song!), Brain of J is such a great opener. Lowlight, In Hiding, even DTE which I'm almost sick of is such a fantastic song. Some of the best lyrics Ed has written.

It's a great album and any time I revisit it I have a blast listening.
